It's not a literal heaping of coals. It's about conviction of wrongdoing.

That is how I have always seen it.

This woman had seriously wronged my wife and I. After she had been kicked out of her house and had no where to go, we were the only ones who offered her a place to stay. While she was in our living room, she asked why we were helping her; because as she said, the way she treated us, she did not deserve our help. We just said it was our duty. I watched her as she stared out the window and knew we had heaped coals of fire on her head. I know that this was the moment that caused her to change her lifestyle. I did this for the wrong reasons though. Partly out of duty but mostly I wanted to heap coals on her head.

At least you're honest, Babbler and, whatever your motivation, you did the right thing. I hope this caused a change in this woman.

There's the 'light' which often isn't shined... We can't do this under our own understanding and its the leadership of the Holy Spirit which opens that door of opportunity for them to grasp.

My first post here. I saw this topic and feel that I have a good explanation.

Back in the days of travel by foot, it was difficult to get a fire started while traveling. (no matches) The solution to this problem was to wrap coals from the campfire and carry them on your head to the next campsite. Then you were able to start the dinner fire more easily.

"heap coals of fire on his head" is a reference to loving your enemy.

That' an interesting perspective; and it makes sense. Welcome to Worthy, btw. :)

Thank you.

Pesonally, I have to do my best to focus my life on God's love. If I stray into resentment an even revenge, I become seperated from the joy of feeling God's presence.

It's seems to be a metaphorical (or is that allegorical? ) way of saying that this person will:

1. either feel guilty about the way they've treated you and repent in anguish

2. or bring judgment upon themselves for this mistreatment; and you shall be rewarded for trying to show God's righteous love.

Either way works the will of God; which is how to interpret hard passages.

:noidea:

wait....what?

I think I need a reference for that. Seems kind of strange to wrap hot coals in something and then caryy it on your head. Drag it behind you or strap it to a donkey, sure. But carry hot coals on your head?
