I bought a book on how to relax, and go so good at it that I talked myself into falling to sleep while the dentist was working on me...... 4 stitches in my tongue later, I made a pledge to myself never to do that again. When the anesthetic wore off, it really hurt. I don't think the dentist ever had any real empathy for me, and kidded me over it for years till he retired. When I awoke, someone had covered us up with a blanket and the room was almost dark....
