The Israelites practiced according to the law proper sanitation for a camp of wandering people, when the rest of the peoples of the times had not a clue. It wasn't found out for hundreds of years why the Israelites did these things. They likely didn't die of as many diseases and pestilences as the other peoples that lived during the same period of time.

This is not just a family custom.  It was instituted by the the Lord Himself.

Guest justwonder
I think many would argue that trial and error could also lead to most of the "laws" of Moses.

Look at the Chinese culture? and the many Cultures of India Burma, Thailand  and Cambodia? In fact the Chinese culture is one of the longest uninterrupted cultures on earth and their diet has expanded, not contracted to a strict diet like the one prescribed in scriptures. So I hope you can see that the kosher diet goes against the natural tendencies of human dietary development throughout history. It is only with modern scientific study that it has been found to be valid. All Praise The Ancient Of Days

In fact, most of the earliest scientists were Christians.  It was the scientists that were too proud to admit a Creator that quit using the more reliant deductive method, to opt for their inductive reasoning that wouldn't allow for God to fit in any of their conclusions.
