As some of you know, hubby and I have been going to a nondenominational Bible church and a united Methodist where we are currently members - I am related to most @ the church. We just got a new pastor. Most like him including hubby - me, not so much. I went to Bible study the last 2 weeks w/ this new pastor - he is doing a study on prayer with the focusing on centering prayer. Now, with much time praying about this and searching into this, I feel that God is telling me to run - I don't know much about this and would appreciate some input on centering prayer.

Here is my take on this: God says we need to be alert and sober if we blank our minds out it gives Satan a chance to get in. We need to focus on God when we pray and not nothingness. That is a scary thing.

Gbu, love - sister-in-Christ,

Jane

I'm not familar with 'centering' prayer...what is that (I could google I guess)

Is the pastor telling you to just open yr mind? If so, yeah, run. Be sober , be vigilant

Does not sound right to me...sounds very new agey

To me it's sounds very Catholic.

I know that many closed orders use it in daily meditation.

They sit in silence that some would call meditation then

they take a word and repeat it in their mind over and over.

I don't know if this is what your pastor is teaching.

To me that is the same as reciting a mantra and something that I don't agree with. :)

Hey herbie, I don't like the sounds of it myself, and think that I would take issue with that. It could be a catholic tie, perhaps something in the pastor's upbringing, but it does sound more like a new age thing to me also, a bit unsettling.

yes seven and wing - I have been researching it and it does state that it is a new age thing as well as a catholic thing - it is very unsettling and it is just another thing to add to my list of reason to run, run, run - I can't wait till hubby gets home from work so we can sit down and pray together and discuss this. Thanks for responding :)

Meditation, mind control...or such, is not the true teaching of Jesus Christ.

People try to reach God that way....but, it is dangerous for your mind and opens the door to satanic attack.

God is not a God afar off.

He is not deaf .... and hears when His children call upon Him.

His presence comes to us. We cannot reach up to Him.

When Jesus' deciples wanted Him to teach them how to pray... He gave us the Our Father prayer.

God wants us to have a relationship with Him,... His children. Just talking to Him ...is what He wants.

Worshipping and praising Him , too.

Follow what Jesus teaches...search the scriptures.

Don't follow man...follow the Lord .

"Centering Prayer" is a very wide open term, and is mostly used for New Agey stuff. It usually serves a thin veneer to disguise Eastern 'empying the mind' meditation impulses, which are inimical to Judeo-Christian beliefs.

But I should appreciate it if you could tell us more about what this Pastor is actually teaching...........
