Porn: The New Narcotic

I think we are entirely too quick to label things as 'addictive' and explain bad behavior in terms of addiction rather than people just doing dumb or wrong things.

I agree with you here, but porn addiction is very real. It's not about just looking at naked people having sex, it's about that physical sensation that goes with it. If that sensation were missing, people won't be so attracted to it.

Yeah but that is true about most activities humans are engaged in, or want to be engaged in. People are tempted by things because they find them pleasant at some level. This for me is a semantics issue. What should and should not addiction count as? At what point does the word not become helpful? This is combined with the fact that addiction is often a word used to excuse people from responsibility to what amounts to poor choices.

Obviously, we do choose to do sinful things, whether it be drinking in excess, doing drugs, smoking or watching porn.  They all start out with a simple choice, but they can become addictive.  An addiction doesn't excuse bad behavior, but you can't just dismiss it.

i didn't read the article, hope this isn't inappropriate.

porn addiction is real.  one of my best friends growing up got married, was married for 3 years, and was divorced because of it. (i promise this wasn't me!)

started porn, and couldn't stop.  wouldn't go to therapy, wouldn't go to marriage counseling, just became addicted and had no intentions of stopping to the detriment of his marriage.

he was so obsessed, he wouldn't even hide it and would kick his wife out of the house.

i knew this guy my entire teenage life.  he loved his wife dearly, and she was mainly the reason why he was liberated from a horrible drug addiction.

how she went from the love of his life, to sorry honey but i can't stop this with no compromise whatsoever.... is more than just a physical thing.

to claim that people with addictive personalities are easily addicted because there are new pathways being formed in their brains is believable.

BUT, we all know that sin originates in the spiritual realm.  pornographic lust and fleshly desires begin in the wicked mind of the natural man.  that man is in bondage to his flesh.

like sin, most addictions are things people have no true conscious power over without the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit.

the flesh likes to practice wickedness, and it doesn't like being crucified.  it should be of no surprise to Christians that porn can grow to become an addicting cancerous disease.

akin to the latest designer drug?  nah, i would say sex is even stronger than that.

God bless.

I don't know why it needs to be labeled specially. This sounds like common akrasia, weakness of the will, to me.

rom 7:15

For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

Yeah but if one keeps going back to porn, is that weakness of the will or an addiction. The addiction ITSELF weakens your will. It's the ADDICTION that takes over. It's important to label things because if you don't then you will never know what the solution is. For example, if someone was depressed and they weren't sure why, wouldn't you wanna know what kind of depression you had? Bipolar/manic etc........labeling it akrasia/weakness of the will are also labels. (Addiction: the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.)

Much love and not lust to ya'll,

The only reason I'm alive today and have come to know The One True God that Created The Heavens and The Earth and The Christ Whom He Sent (John 17:3) is because I came to believe I had an addiction to drinking alcohol-among others-and if I didn't stop-I would die-either by driving in a blackout or whatever...and there were people there that had stopped...one day at a time...and the Way they stopped was because there is A Higher Power (God)...and I wanted what they had...They had stopped and were so content-and I didn't understand that...I'm alive and didn't die without God in my life because of having an addiction...I don't drink today...

What happened in my life is that I went further...I wanted to know everything about God...Hence...I was led into Finding The God of The Bible In Whom I Totally Trust and Depend On...and am having quite a wonderful journey that is and will never be finished...I'm excited about that!!!

Just wanted to put this out there too-Yes...I would venture to say now that possibly the sexual desire of the flesh (in lust form) is probably even stronger than smoking...and now I know why it is mentioned so much in The Bible...it causes problems as does any addiction...

The enlightenment of the cause of my addictions just about bowled me over when God literally showed me The Truth...All of my addictions-not just one-Are The Result of The Desire of My Flesh...That is why today I desire above all-To Walk In Love and not Lust-To Walk In The Spirit and Not my Flesh...My Fleshly Desires Hinder My Walk With God In All Ways...

Father, I ask that we be enlightened to Your Truth...Help us leave our fleshly desires behind and strive for what is ahead of us...Literally Walking Out of Our Fleshly Desires Into What You Would Have Us Do For You God On This Earth...Whew...My my...In The Name of Jesus...There is Power In His Name...Wow...I'm listening to Break Every Chain...

If they manage to label porn an actual addiction, maybe people can get time off work (to view more porn) with pay, to go to a shrink who will tell them they

are sick and then those who are porn addicted can say 'it isn't their fault' and then perhaps a few months leave might be in order, with pay of course,

addiction counselling, group therapy (no giggles please) and meds will be perscribed and the drug companies will have to have gazillions in research money

to help all the poor degenerates addicts who can't take their eyes off someone else's daughter and then more studies will be needed and of course there will

be no end to the volunteers for that study but maybe they can be paid so that at least their addiction will be worth something and...it's all downhill folks

Wondering when the word sin is going to be removed from the Bible and replaced with habit, addiction, impulse, bad childhood, poor choice and needy

Maybe society needs to stop excusing itself for its flagrant sin.  Cause that is what it is.

The brain is a roadmap of constantly changing paths and highways.  Unless you watch soap opera all day or Dr. Doozey or whatever that guys name is,

your brain is constantly developing new pathways and forming habits or unforming habits.

People can addict themselves to anything...how about fetishes or hoarding?  All these things are behaviors.

Maybe if there wasn't so much money involved in porn and it didn't appeal to base human nature, it would not be so...cough...appealing

I wouldn't excuse my sin in the name of addiction just yet..............

I read an essay from a psychology site on this topic. There is a difference between high speed internet porn addiction and other types of porn addiction, such as magazine porn. The reason for this is the ubiquity of porn on the net. A person can go through an image every few seconds for days on end. Each image causes a dopamine spike. It causes the base dopamine level to increase in the brain and the desire for the continuation of the pleasure spikes is maintained. Also the article said that recovery from the addiction is possible, but for younger people the recovery period is about six months, but for people who get the addiction at an older age the recovery period is much shorter; about one or two months.

well, that's one way of looking at it.  another is to see that process of conviction as sanctification, and as evidence that we have escaped condemnation, sealed by the Holy Spirit.   :mgcheerful:
