But let's qualify first your question, because there are so many people who call themselves "Christians" today.... Assuming that you mean how to identify a true follower of Jesus, I can give you a few answers. First, he or she believes in the Bible as the Word of God. This is perhaps the most common answer that you will receive. However, there are problems with this, because the Bible has also been abused so much, and is being used by many cults besides... so that you simply cannot trust someone who is claiming to be a Christian just because he or she claims to believe the Bible. And so I think the best way to identify true Christians is to observe their lives, and judge them by their works. Jesus said: Beware of false prophets, who comes to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:15-20, ESV, emphasis mine) I myself had bad experiences with these so-called Christians, and so I've learned how to be discerning and even skeptical when I encounter people claiming to be my brothers and sisters in the Lord. There are pretty loving and kind people who are atheists and then there are people who are not obviously that way who are sincere believers. Moreover, suppose you have a new believer, sincere, but comes out of a 'rough' spot so 'progress' in becoming Christlike for them may not be so obvious from someone who grew up in a Christian family in a Christian community. And, even when it comes to testimonies, I can attest from my personal experience I have not 'sounded Christian' to some people even though I have been a sincere believer trying to communicate. All that is to say I think it can actually get a bit complicated.
