I had a recent 5 hour stay at the ER. They did not do anything elaborate. The bill? Over $4,000.00.

Too many variables to be able to guess at the cost.  Location alone could change the amount by 25% or more.   How many doctors you were seen by will also be a factor, in some ER's you get a separate bill if you see anyone other than the attending at the ER.  Any medications, X-rays, etc will add to the cost.

This is just a basic cost. Like I said there was nothing elaborate done to me. It can go way over that amount.

It costs a lot of money to have the er open and waiting for you when you need them. The staff costs money even if no one is there. That mri machine costs well over a million dollars. Your bill includes a portion of all the overhead costs of the er.

We had to take my dad to the ER recently.  $1300 for ambulance one way.  Haven't got the ER bill yet.

twice in the last 6 years or so I have gone to the ER with severe chest pains that were caused by way too much strong green tea....   both trips were about ten thousand dollars, but they actually paid the insurance company much less, but if one didn't have insurance they would expect full payment.

You can usually negotiate prices down if you pay cash. They like having their money immediately.

There are several ways you can either negotiate the cost or get the cost deleted depending on your income. You just need to know who to talk with.

Praise God that we can go to the ER as many times as we need and not have to pay a penny as it is all covered in National Insurance
