Matthew 2: 17-19

I have a few questions for you all to ponder

Matthew 5: 17-19

17 "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Question 1) When will heaven and earth pass away?

Question 2) What commandments was the Messiah refering to when he said:

19Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven;

Ok...I'm answering this off the top of my head.

Heaven and earth pass away after the 1000yr reign. A new heaven and earth are created.

Jesus fulfiiled the law, and it shall endure. (verse 20 points to why Jesus is where we must put our faith)

Verse 19...false teachers (least), and Godly teachers (great).

So...that's my take w/o a lot of study.

2. The whole of God's Law. Jesus was answering the accusation that He was trying to abolish the Law, when in fact, He had come to fulfill it, by keeping it perfectly.

Hi Timothy! What about the "and there was no more sea" part?

Could that be the place that now separates us from heaven?

The sea has long been a symbol of separation. A divider of nations, constantly at a state of unrest, which is contrary to the very nature of the New Heaven and Earth.

Let me just add to what Tim said....Ancient Hebrews viewed seas as barriers between the known world nations.  Natural borders (mountains, rivers, oceans, etc) have always divided countries/provinces.  The Apostle John sees a new heaven/earth that doesn't present/allow for any such division.

The concept goes deeper and shouldn't surprise us because JESUS talked much about it.  Sexual distinction, racial differences, economic inequality, even denominational bias are types of barriers or "seas" that separate us.  In the new heaven/earth these barriers will be WIPED OUT!

So from this can I deduce that you are saying that the WORDs of the Messiah (His Instructions to us) are the commandments we must follow and that any other commandments are not for us?

Valid? Definitely. God's Law has never been invalidated. Necessary? For salvation, no. Yet we have been given renewed hearts and minds, which compell us towards righteousness, and away from the unfruitful works of darkness.
