Is it Biblically sound? I guess that depends on how one is using the phrase. [1] If one is saying that God's ways are so mysterious that He can't be known, then that is not sound. God can be known by his children. He encourages us to "diligently seek him" and he reveals so much of himself to us in the Bible. [2] If one is merely saying that God's essence and attributes make his thinking and acting different from us - and ergo, mysterious to us - then I suppose it is sound. God did say in Isaiah 55 that his thoughts and ways are FAR above our thoughts and ways and not like his. But that does not mean he cannot be known. Many things have been hidden from man through the ages. But as for how God works,he simply speaks and it comes to pass.

God's thoughts are above our own thoughts as humans. Isaiah 55:8-9 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,So are My ways higher than your ways,And My thoughts than your thoughts. However, we walk by faith not by sight 2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

But there is not scripture with those words, but yes there are several places where is does say that in other ways.

How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! This verse also comes close to the phrase in the hymn. So while the thought is Biblical , it can't be found in the Bible in so many words.
