Soul sleep seems to be an old testament belief.  The always use OT verses when supplying proof texts, except for the term itself.  Paul asserted that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.  It doesn't sound like any times elapses between the two.  Certainly the spirit or soul doesn't hover around as most people seem to believe these days.  I have encountered oriental people, native Americans, hispanic people and even some Christians that think this.  That is why many people are afraid of cemeteries and hospitals, which makes me throw up my hands since I worked many years in hospitals and live very near to a cemetery.  They just don't want to think about death, which I consider to be graduation.  I will get to shed this painful old body and will be free in the presence of the LORD! It just doesn't get any better than that.

The beginning of the second eternal death for the lost is instantaneous as they wait in Hell for their judgment, afterwords, cast into the eternal Lake of Fire.

Rev 21:8  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Look to be reaching them saints, We don't want the lost going there!
 
However for the Christian this is glorious, as we are straight off with our Lord!
