Hi Running Gator,

As to `death,` God`s word tells us - `The sting of death is sin...` (1 Cor. 15: 56)

And as to why there was a tree which had fruit that enabled one to live forever - ` Jesus said, " I am the way, the truth and the life...' (John 14: 6) The `tree of life` is a pictorial representation of receiving life (eternal) from God. Trees do not give `eternal life` even in the garden. That life is from God only.

regards, Marilyn.

In Gen 3 God said this...Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever

It seems pretty clear to me that God is saying that eating of the tree of life would allow them to live forever.

I do understand why people view it that way, I am just not sure it is the correct view.

It is also important to note that the result of the eradication of sin in the future has, as one of it's results, the eradication of physical death.  It's part of the curse that is eradicated. When sin is done away with, we will live in eternity forever.  So there is a definite connection between Adam's fall and physical death.

Spiritual death is separation from God.   Death in the bible is always about separation.  Physical death is the separation of the body and the soul, spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God.   Only one of those things happened on the day that Adam and Eve ate the fruit.

If they were made immortal, why did they need to eat from a tree that made them live forever?

I do agree...

Hi Running Gator,

If there was such a thing as a `tree of life,` then the Lord Himself would not have had to die. We only would have to say sorry to God, repent and then be given this wonderful fruit that gives us eternal life.

Note - all scripture is to reveal Christ to us, His holy character, His amazing attributes and His wonderful purposes. It is of Christ that we partake, not a piece of `magical` fruit.

regards, Marilyn.

If Jesus had not died on the cross there would have been no forgiveness... period.

So, you are saying the Tree of Life and the Cherubim and the flaming sword are all just symbolic and were not real?

That, again, assumes a purpose for the tree of life not stated in Scripture.

If they were NOT immortal, then why curse them with physical death?   If they were already capable of dying how was physical death a curse

Yes, but that is the effect it would have on Adam in his fallen state.  That doesn't speak to the purpose of the tree for Adam in his unfallen state.   Adam was immortal and unable to die physically prior to the fall, as God did not engineer death into creation.   So the purpose of the tree for Adam in his unfallen state must have been different.
