Thanx for the info on the North books. I figured they were good. I haven't heard of these other authors mentioned. I'll have to check them out. :noidea:

Hey Annette!

Thanks for asking the question! I bought one of his books for my brother in law, but never asked how he liked it. I did wonder at the time if they were any good, because they sounded very interesting!

In His Love,

Suzanne

After reading this thread yesterday, I checked the local library's online card catalog, and found that both Oliver North novels are available there. So I have checked out 'Mission Compromised.' I've read about 150 pages (out of 605) and like what I have read so far.

What does it tell you about a novel, that on the copyright page in the front there is a notice that all quotes from the Bible, unless otherwise noted, come from a specific translation of the Bible? How many novels have such a note in them?

Oh, and as I was reading chapter two last night - I was in tears. Very moving.

Just from what I have read so far, I will give it a :( .

Is there any romance at all in it?

Yes, a little...but I liked the books regardless.:(

I'm glad I brought the subject up since quite a few people have not heard of the books.  What Bible translation are they using?  I'm thinking of buying these for someone and they want only one certain translation.  Please let me know ASAP!  I wondered if it had any Bible verses at all so I'm glad you brought that up.  Is there any romance at all in it?

Thanks!!

The translation is NKJV. I don't yet know about romance, since I haven't had time to read much further yet. I am hoping the adulterous wife will come to the LORD, and repent and go back to her husband...

sounds like I need to go to the book store. I was not aware he had written these books and they sound very good.

a good military man,  his was not to wonder why, but his was to do or die,

do as he is told, and not to think for himself,

as far as anybooks about him or by him, have not read any.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Well "just following orders" was dismissed as an acceptable justification for criminal and imoral acts at the Nurenburg trials of Nazi criminals, so I don't see why it should be an acceptable now. North may be a poster boy of the American right, but he was also up to his neck in the squalid Iran-Contra affair. Helping negotiate an arms deal between Israel and their supposed enemies in the Islamic Republic of Iran and taking a kickback from the proceeds to fund contra terrorists involved in trying to overthrow the democratic, but left-wing government of Nicuragua. Furthermore, do you not think that he has admitted to lying to the US congress, a fact about which he seems unrepentant, make him less than perfect "christian" role model.

Bearing this in mind and the fact that he is still alive - unlike the many Nicuraguan peasants slaughtered by his Contra allies - "his was but to do and lie" would be a more appropriate ending to that quote (the values of which in its original form are anyway profoundly anti-Christian).

Ok, I finished reading the first one. Mini review time.

I enjoyed it. Trying to remember the course of 600+ pages - but I don't think there was any cussing. Maybe 4 'sex' scenes - NOT graphic, discretely handled in my opinion. Two are positive, between a married couple. One is adulterous, and the woman goes through a lot of mental anguish afterwards. The last is a bad guy being a bad guy.

This is a spy/military/high-tech novel, so it is something like a Tom Clancy. Some of it moved me to tears; some had me frightened for the characters. It was well-written, I thought.

And... there was more than one clear presentation of the Gospel - including the Roman Road.

I would reccommend it.
