Some Christians are too busy worrying about things that go "bump" in the night than they are about the salvation of their neighbors. Harry Potter is good literature. Kids today don't know how to read, write, and communicate effectively enough. WSB you commented just the other day about a poster's grammar. Well guess what? The literacy and comprehension of American children - and adults in America is roughly between 20% and 30%. That's somewhere in the region of between 60 and 90 million people over 15 who can't read or write. And it's getting worse (http://indian-river.fl.us/living/services/als/scope.html).

So the solution is to let them read about fantasy characters and made-up words that have no bearing on real literacy?

What happened to "Read the Bible?" That's how I learned to read BTW. And when I would curse or cheat or lie or mis-behave as a child, guess what? My mom didn't give me "five minutes in the room". It was spanking, plus on the knees in the corner, or grounded, or write lines from the Bible about what I did wrong. or all of the above.

Maybe if "christians" loved their children enough to actually spend time teaching them something, then the literacy rate wouldn't be so bad. Mabye if people actually read their Bibles to the children then they would learn something, instead of letting saturday morning cartoons and Harry Potter be their education.

Fantasy characters and made-up words have no bearing on literacy? Goodness me! I'd love to hear what William Shakespeare or Sir Authur Conan Doyle would have to say about that statement!

My mother and my sister have read the children's bible to my two year lod neice since she was a new born. My neice watches cartoons and dances to music but she always wants them to read her bible to her. She points to the pictures and tells us what the picture is. People can do both!

You may be well versed in the bible, but you are a little rrough around the edges as far as compassion goes. Up until right now I was a Harry Potter basher but after hearing what Ovedya said I wonder how does Harry Potter differ from Superman or Spiderman? Even grade 1 readers are secular in nature so do we do away with all literature that is not the bible? Did God create this world to b boring? I want my kid's to be able to read the bible when they are old enough to understand it, so maybe if they are interested in Harry Potter let them read it. My son has been taught that Harry Potter is evil so I doubt I will have to worry about that but my daughter may bring it home. She's a little more rebellious than my son and a little sharper when it comes to scholastics. My son is spiritually wise and I want him to absorb the bible. God bless his mind :emot-dance:

If they can understand harry potter, I find it hard to believe they have trouble understanding the Bible.

I am 26 years old and I am pretty smart but I have a hard time understanding the Bible at times. Harry Potter is easier.

How does a 5 year old understand thiswhen I'm not sure wheyher I do or not

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. :emot-dance:

Amen, Geri.

You know Christians have read secular stories to children at bedtime for centuries. Christians have even been the source of many of the "classic" stories we read to our kids today. Hans Christian Anderson and the Grimm brothers were all Christians who wrote about princes and princesses in far away kingdoms, with dragons and witches, etc. These are all excellent literature designed to spark imagination and a passion for reading in kids.

Most kids - and I don't say that lightly - most kids today are so inundated with movies, television, video games, and music, that they don't have time for reading. They are bombarded with media, media, media. It is a rarity to see a young person with a book in their hands today. Even at the public library kids have to be told to turn their video games off! It's terrible!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Daniel: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 3

      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this study, I'll be focusing on Daniel and his picture of the resurrection and its connection with Yeshua (Jesus).

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
