The Amplified Bible will take a verse that has 8 words and make it 18. This is helpful for bringing out meaning in a passage, but I think the reader will get verbosity overload if they use it for a devotional. I agree that the NKJV is probably the best for day-to-day devotional reading and is what I use for that purpose. Don't forget about the NASB. Enough good things cannot be said about that translation. After the Reformation 7 books were removed from the original Bible. Any of the Bibles listed previously will not have the Books of Tobit, Judith, 1 Maccabes, 2 Maccabes, Wisdon, or Sirach, which were all in the Old Testament. I often times have poeple tell me that the Catholic Church added these books, but its just the opposite, the Protestant Reformation removed these books becasus it didn't fit with their new doctrine.
