I just read about the big winner in the over 300 million lottery.

He says he will "tithe" part of it to his church.

What do you say to a born again believer playing the lottery?

What does God say?

Please try to keep this to the questions at hand.

Hello All

Ok lets dwell on the lottery system. Think of all the staff who earn their salaries from the money people pay buying tickets. The advertising agencies contracted to spend millions to advertise it all,  then there is the millions/ billions ( if you put all the different lotteries together) in taxes they take out for Governments.

Now so from the very start there is a loss. They can never pay out as much as they get from the punters. and what do all the people above produce for their labors??? Are they doing something truly worthwhile for the betterment of mankind or are they just handling other people

OK,  I think there is a scripture that would particullarly apply to the lottery, I'm searching now.

On a more personal experience I'll say this.  We have a personal friend who got "hooked" on scratch-off tickets.

She got caught embezzling from her company to the tune of over $40,000 in a years time.  This was to play scratch-off.

Gambling is gambling, and an addictive and harmful one.

Also adstar in response to your post I think there is a scripture for your viewpoint too.

My opinion?

"He who is without sin cast the first stone."

I saw a statistic yesterday where 80% of pastors in the US admit to having had an affair and some are more concerned about a man buying a lottery ticket?

I heard my local Christian radio station bashing this guy this morning too. It saddens me that some would rather condemn the man for buying a lottery ticket than rejoice that someone won who is willing to give a tenth to the Lord! I saw the guy on CNN this morning and the man made reference on the air to God, proclaiming the name of Jesus Christ! Christians should rejoice over that rather than condemn him for doing something we all have done before anyway. I know I have bought a lottery ticket before! Anyone else care to confess with me?

fishman....I definitely don't want to come across as self righteous!

Yes I have bought them before.  A long time ago.

A sin is a sin. No matter what it is .

I'm just questioning what is God's viewpoint on this. I'm not here addressing other sins.

Do you think gambling is or isn't a sin?

About all those pastors you mentioned....that's another discussion post altogether.

In this day of christianity that yells legalism at every comment on obedience from the instruction of scripture, I feel it's all the more important to call out sinful activities!

So now I guess all the ways of the world are OK to follow?  Isn't that what is implied with this on the national news??

Boy, I could really get going here, but I want to keep this strictly to a scriptural answer to this lottery situation.

I guess I shouldn't have asked for opinions, cause God's Word rules the day in a true born again believers life!

Still searching for the answer I want.........

Blessings...Carl OSAS

There is nothing in Scripture that speaks against gambling, unless we as Christians make it say what we want it to mean.  There is always a danger of taking scripture out of context.

First, I don't remember reading/hearing the gentleman who won in West Virginia say he was a millionaire.  He said he owns a couple of businesses.  Second, he took the lump sum, which after taxes amounts to approx $113 million.  Third, he said he was giving 17 million to three different churches as a tithe to do with as they deem fit.

PS:  He also spoke about purchasing another business, which he isn't  going to make a profit off of, but he will be able to rehire 25 people he had to lay off to work it.  His wife also said she now could take a trip to Israel, which is what she's always wanted to do.

Don't miss the big picture by just looking at the little snapshot.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
