Unless you think the scrambled chapters might be confusing, I've even used Moffatt!

It's got tons of translators footnotes, and the language is so clear. Here's link to it... http://www.bible.org/netbible/

Also, there is a new translation, the Christian Standard Bible (CSB), published by Holman, it is a good modern english translation. I personally have both and use both. I was going to say either the NIV or NASB also, as I really like mine. Probably the NIV would be best. Also like Wayne said, I would stay away from anything like the Living Bible, or any kind of "paraphrase" Bible. God bless your friend.

I have also found some of the more modern translations a bit more in line with my interpritations of other translations. When I was first saved a promptly went out and bought an NIV. After reading some disturbing things about the translation I soon replaced it with a KJV. Being that my KJV has thumb tabs, it is usually the one I carry on Sunday and to Bible study sessions. I recently was awarded a gidt certificate to Barnes and Noble with which I went and bought yet another version. I looked at several different translations when I found two that I liked. I decided to compare the two translations and so I picked a verse and turned to it in both. Both were easy to read and translated similarly. I was partial to one but was still unable to decide. I put them both up and shopped around. I went back twice more to read from the translation I had chosen. Each time I went to read from this bible I turned directly to a chapter in Mathew I believe. I vaguely remember what the chapter pertained to. It was about maturing in Christ and assuming our place in the body. I was quite moved by it, especialy after having turned directly to it twice after having set the book down twice. I took it as a hint and bought it. This translation has to be the most straight forward and basic bible I have found. Its called the Every Day Study Bible - New Century Version. Take your friend to shop for one and let him/them chose. Thanks be to God that your friend has seen the light. I am thankful every time I witness the spirit moving in someone. It gives me hope as I battle to purge my life of sinfull behaviors. Maybe you won't I just find it don't leave as much out as the newer translations.
