I've always been a little partial to the Old Testament.  My father, who died 15 months ago taught me to love it and understand it.

I thought we could post some gems from the Old Testament that are meaningful and teach us something personal or connect us with God.

Here's one of my favorites.  It's from Habakkuk.

The Hebrew people of Habakkuk's day were just about as awful as they could get.  Habakkuk went to God for help.  God gave him the worst news possible - it was too late.  God was going to allow a foreign nation to overthrow his own people and it was going to be bad.

Life is hard sometimes - sometimes a LOT of the time.  There's people just on this forum that have woes and foresee woes coming in their lives.

Habakkuk didn't have a pouty temper tantrum. He accepted the sovereignty of God and he trusted God.

The final words of Habakkuk. [Chapter 3 verses 16 - 19]

" I hear, and my body trembles;
    my lips quiver at the sound;
rottenness enters into my bones;
    my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
    to come upon people who invade us.

17 Though the fig tree should not blossom,
    nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
    and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
    and there be no herd in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
    I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
19 God, the Lord, is my strength;
    he makes my feet like the deer's;
    he makes me tread on my high places."

Jeremiah is one of my favorite books of the OT

Jeremiah 9

23Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise manglory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty manglory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: 24But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

I didn't do this when I was young.  I pouted.  I complained.  I coveted.

But over the past 3 three years [ages 55-58], I have experience some things I wouldn't wish on a dog.  I follow this principle.  It's what has gotten me through the savage times.

The new is in the old contained and the old is in the new explained! I believe we should study the whole Bible because you really can't thoroughly understand the new without the old and vice versa. I just love God's Word, the Old and the New Testament!

Here's another from Isaiah.  God is going to destroy evil and wicked nations [and he even had some of his own evil and wicked people carried away in to captivity].  But God always has a remnant of people.  God still has a remnant today.  We are included in it.

Isaiah 41:8B and 10

"But you, Israel...
…. fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand"

Do you have an Old Testament gem?

Jayne,

I had just memorized this verse last month. It helped me and it helped my mother through her trial.  I love the Old Testament and feel there are many great gems in it, I love Proverbs and the Book of Esther.

There are so many wonderful passages that cause me to think beyond my preconceived concepts.  Here is one.

Ecclesiastes 8:17

Then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.
