Some questions about Hell?

Hi friends,

I just got through an interesting thread on the Archangel Michael, and who he is and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. It was like a roller coaster ride. I figured that i didn't see anything about Hell on this page and i didn't want to know what the old WB members had to say about Hell, I was curious about what the current members believed? So I'll just add a question here or there from time to time and you guys are experts so you know what to do.

First question is:

1. What is hell? and 1b.) who's going there? simple questions that don't really need a sermon to explain it. If this is something that the moderator sees fit to not continue than I apologize and i will try to start a thread that can be agreed upon. I learn a lot from you guys so keep working with me.

1. A place you don't want to end up.

1b. If you have received Christ's attoning sacrifice for your sin, you don't have to worry about it.

thanks for the answers.....but i guess i have to be a little more specific. Is it a real place or is it a state of being? I heard different sides on this...........just wondering what you think.

If this is true, then how come we all don't believe the same things about hell. Some say it exist, some say it doesn't. some say ppl go there when they die...some say you way for the judgement. I'm just interested on where most of the ppl here stand.

It is a real place, Take Lazarus and the Rich Man for instance Luke 16:19-31.

Well . . . that depends.

Some people use the word to describe a state of being.

Example from a list of church bulletin bloopers:

"Sermon topic: What is Hell?

Come early and listen to our choir practice."

And others use the term to describe a place - specifically where the "unsaved" go.

And we've had some very interesting debates on this board about Hell (the place) and what it is and whether or not our understanding of Hell describes where souls go to now or if it describes the Lake of Fire.

Part of the reason I was being elusive in my response is because I've seen where these debates go.

It's a place of seperation and isolation from God with a 100% realization of what that means and how it feels. People who chose to live away from God on earth are merely given that same action in eternity, only in eternity they realize the full impact of it and it destroys their hearts. The pain is constant.

Thanks again for your answers, very informative. My next question is, since most of hell is describe in Revelation, and it is a symbolic book, are all of the descriptions of hell literal or can some of them be symbolic/metaphoric?

I come from the school of thought that the descriptions of hell are symbolic. Before I get jumped on, I say this because I believe hell is so awful, that Christ spared us by giving the symbolism of what it was...that the true nature of hell could not be formed in any human tongue. Thus, He gave a depiction that while bad and no vacation spot, was only a centilla of the pain expirienced there.

I think that hell is the grave, and that everyone goes there (save for those who are alive at Christ's return)
