Literally in the Hebrew the passage says:

"Train up a child in his own way"

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That sounds a whole lot like the "way he is bent," doesn't it to you? I mean "his own way" is not the way of God.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I would agree. I don't see it as a warning however. I see it as an encouragement to parents to know there kids and help them to discover their personalities, talents and abilities.

I believe the principle demonstrated in this verse works in every area of life, even where money is concerned.

Shiloh, this is the reason for this topic. To Rightly Divide the Word of Truth we cannot take one verse that means what it means and then apply it to something else. Luke 6:38 has nothing to do with money. (And Rev 3:20 has noting to do with Salvation of the sinner

EricH, Well said. Thanks for your post.

From Post #20:

I think "abuse" is a strong word. Perhaps "misapplied" is a better assessment.

Thank you Tess for your comments. Misapplied would be a better title.

You six sound like broken records in other topics. Lets keep with the Topic subject this one is on "Abused Verses." Do you have any comments in this topic or do you individuals just go around other topics condemning and making fun of believers that don't believe the way you do? This is really great Christian love you portray to others.

Wow! Thanks for putting me in great company there, fella! However, YOU are the one who sounds like a broken record with your tax-paying ideas, but I regress. Since we are talking about misapplied verses, how about we look at one I think you're overlooking:

24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?" 25 He said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax,  from their sons or from strangers?" 26 When Peter said, "From strangers," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are exempt. 27 "However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me."

It sounds to me as if Jesus might have been a little taken aback by being made to pay taxes! However, what did He do? He told Peter to go pay it! Does He expect less from you and I? I agree with you 110% that the tax system and government are in a mess but do you honestly think your approach is how He would handle it? :13:

Just so you understand, Mote -

Often newcomers enter message boards like this with the intention of promoting their church and their doctrine. Many of us have become sensative to this, especially since many of these promotions either are or hint of heretical.

Sicne your initial postings had to do with promoting a certain teaching, many have become wary. Is this post going to lead to promoting this church or doctrine or whatever it is you were promoting in the other thread?

Believe it or not, it is a valid concern. I hope you can respect the concerns we board members have in this regard Would you assure us that your intent with this thread is not to point back to what has been presented in the other thread you started? That's all.

Thanks!

Here is one to ponder:

"Train a child in the way he should go,

and when he is old he will not turn from it" (Prov 22:6 NIV).

When I was growing up I had always heard that this meant that if you train a child properly, that when he is old he will return to that proper training. Then, as an older young person, I had a pastor tell us that "the way he should go" is actually "the way he is bent." He said that rather than it being an encouragement to parents, it is a warning that if we raise our children according to their natural bents, that even when they are old they will not depart from the way they were raised. I think this actually makes more sense, and here is why: If I raise a child and I try to raise him the right way, but I don't do a perfect job, and I make mistakes, which we all do, then which way is he going to choose when he gets old? There is no way I can raise a child perfectly, so it leaves a lot of room there for him/her to go any of the ways I have raised him/her. Does this make sense? I mean, I was not a perfect parent!! I made some real blunders!! But, I also taught my kids the right ways, too. So, which are they going to follow? Whereas, if you translate the verse the other way, as a warning, then you are basically saying that if you give in to the child's temper tantrums, expect that he is going to grow up expecting that everyone is going to give in to him. I think this makes more sense.

One other thought, and this has to do with predestination, but the Bible talks about how God chooses to make some people for good purposes and some for bad and I know that Jacob & Esau were like that, meaning it was like that is the way it was designed to happen, but don't you think that their parents probably trained them the same way? I know this is another whole subject, but it is something I'm grappling with myself. Is it possible that God could have created one of my children for bad? I mean, can we take Prov 22:3 and use it as a guarantee that our children will follow the Lord if we taught them about the Lord when they were young? Well, I know I probably opened a can of worms here, and I truly don't want to begin an argument, but if anyone has any thoughts on this verse and the alternate meaning and on whether or not we can use this as an assurance of the salvation of our children, I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

Literally in the Hebrew the passage says:

"Train up a child in his own way"

My understanding of this verse is; Seek the Lord to know what the call on your childs life is, then train him up in it. Prepare him to walk in the calling the Lord has put on his life. Just a little revelation from the Lord a few years back.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
