I came across this Dylan track after purchasing an anthology collection of some well known and lesser known songs from Bob's early 60's to the latter 90's catalog. Not Dark Yet, stood out as one of the most outstanding in the lyrics since, Tangled Up in Blue. The story setting is similar in the way it appears indicative of the southlands. "It's too hot to sleep and time is running away." It seems to refer somewhat of growing older and a few of the sorrowful aspects of it. "It's not dark yet, but it's getting there."

  1. Not Dark Yet

Shadows are falling and I been here all day
It's too hot to sleep and time is running away
Feel like my soul has turned into steel
I've still got the scars that the sun didn't let me heal

There's not even room enough to be anywhere
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there
Well my sense of humanity is going down the drain
Behind every beautiful thing, there's been some kind of pain

She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind
She put down in writin' what was in her mind
I just don't see why I should even care
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

Well I been to London and I been to gay Paree
I followed the river and I got to the sea
I've been down to the bottom of a whirlpool of lies
I ain't lookin' for nothin' in anyone's eyes

Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

I was born here and I'll die here, against my will
I know it looks like I'm movin' but I'm standin' still

Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
Don't even hear the murmur of a prayer
It's not dark yet, but it's getting there

It looks like I missed the notification where I was tagged. Ah well, Everything is Broken. ;)

I was casually exposed to Dylan's music many years ago but it wasn't until I met a very dear friend that I was exposed to his music in a meaningful fashion. Along the way I was introduced to Jakob Dylan's music and learned of the immense influence Bob Dylan had on the late Tom Petty.

I agree. Dylan's main talent was as a poet. I saw him in concert in the 70's. I was only one of the many who openly winced as he hit certain notes.

I concur. His son Jakob excels in performance (he's the better singer) but there's no mistaking Bob's voice, is there? Nope!

I remember Jakob's first LP with the Wallflowers. Hit song on this album/CD was, One Headlight. Great!

  1. One Headlight

So long ago, I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend
Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease
As I listened through the cemetery trees

I seen the sun comin' up at the funeral at dawn
The long broken arm of human law
Now it always seemed such a waste, she always had a pretty face
So I wondered how she hung around this place

Hey, come on try a little
    Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
    In the middle
    But me & Cinderella
    We put it all together
    We can drive it home
    With one headlight

    She said it's cold
    It feels like Independence Day
And I can't break away from this parade
But there's got to be an opening
Somewhere here in front of me
Through this maze of ugliness and greed
And I seen the sun up ahead at the county line bridge
Sayin' all there's good and nothingness is dead
We'll run until she's out of breath
She ran until there's nothin' left
She hit the end, it's just her window ledge

Hey, come on try a little
    Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
    In the middle
    But me & Cinderella
    We put it all together
    We can drive it home
    With one headlight

    Well this place is old
It feels just like a beat up truck
I turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn
Well it smells of cheap wine, cigarettes
This place is always such a mess
Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn
I'm so alone and I feel just like somebody else
    Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same
But somewhere here in between the city walls of dyin' dreams
I think of death, it must be killin' me

Hey, hey hey come on try a little
    Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
    In the middle
    But me & Cinderella
    We put it all together

Made me think of this Leonard Cohen song

Leonard Cohen Lyrics

"You Want It Darker"

If you are the dealer, I'm out of the game
If you are the healer, it means I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory then mine must be the shame
You want it darker
We kill the flame

Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the help that never came
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord

There's a lover in the story
But the story's still the same
There's a lullaby for suffering
And a paradox to blame
But it's written in the scriptures
And it's not some idle claim
You want it darker
We kill the flame

They're lining up the prisoners
And the guards are taking aim
I struggled with some demons
They were middle class and tame
I didn't know I had permission to murder and to maim
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord

Magnified, sanctified, be thy holy name
Vilified, crucified, in the human frame
A million candles burning for the love that never came
You want it darker
We kill the flame

If you are the dealer, let me out of the game
If you are the healer, I'm broken and lame
If thine is the glory, mine must be the shame
You want it darker

Hineni, hineni
Hineni, hineni
I'm ready, my lord

Hineni
Hineni, hineni
Hineni

I want to say , in defence of Dylan's voice that, like I said before, I think that some of his music is written to work best with his voice. To each his own of course. But to me it's a bit like modern art or like modern classical music. It's an acquired taste. To me a painting with only coloured blocks is ok, because there are interesting elements that could be explored. It's beauty is exactly in it's break away from convention. That is what makes it interesting. I would argue the same in music, and particularly  Dylan's voice. It does not need to be beautiful or smooth or stick to musical conventions, because the voice inherently adds to the message and it is  message against the norm. And this gives it depth and character. Not that I don't understand why most people would prefer other voices. In a sense, that is is exactly what makes it attractive to me.

      Jakob Dylan - One Headlight

"Oh, where have you been my blue eyed son?"

From Bob Dylan's, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall

I bought this Wallflowers album because of this song.  I was working in Cape Girardeau, MO at a construction site and as one of many machine designers, we'd pass albums back and forth listening to music while doing 3-D Cad.  This and an album by The Verve were my contribution.
