What can I do?

I really need help to stop myself from saying "gosh" or "heck".

I feel it is wrong.

No, this is NOT going to be another eupaushism Thread, allI'm asking is suggestions on how I can stop myself from using words like that.

Any other suggestions?

Yomo, why do you feel these words are wrong? If you feel that you shouldn't say them, try to bite your tongue when you feel the need to say them. Or punch the wall or break something. I do that soemtimes.

Seriously, put it into prayer and have faith that God has taken it away from you to speak like that.

Breaking things is a bit much Constant, dont'cha think?

Yomo: If you want to stop. Ask G-d. There is nothing wrong with these words. I even say "Oh Shucks" "Gol Darn it" and "What the Heck" myself. I try really hard to control my use of profanity.

If you act like you're in church all of the time, you'll probably stop. Who would want to get on God's bad side and use profanity in church or around babies? Yeah, think babies.

You've been given some pretty good suggestions, I'd say I don't particularly believe that these words are wrong, either, but if you feel you need to stop, then you should. My advice is this: don't exaggerate anything. It sounds kinda unrelated, but look at it this way:

When you claim that "that sandwich was awesome!" you are taking a word ("awesome") and putting it to lesser use than it deserves. God is deserving of the word "awesome," the beauty of the mountains could be said to be "awesome." To describe somethng as insignificant as a sandwich with the word "awesome" is a pretty big exaggeration. If we consistently use such hyperboles to describe the mundane, what words will be left that are great enough to describe the things that are truly awesome?

I think this is the root of the problem of swearing. People simply run out of strong enough words to describe their feelings, so they must use ones that are so strong that they are considered offensive. The problem only perpetuates itself, because the more people use the offensive words, the more they become desensitized to them and must use words that are even harsher, and so on and so forth.

I heard a wise man say "Christians, above all [others], should be masters of their language, and not profane God by describing the ordinary with words reserved for the truly Awesome." (Dr. Harold Best, in a lecture to Bible College students)

If you take a moment before you say something, and ask yourself whether you're putting just the right amount of feeling into your words, you may find that you need those bothersome words and expressions less than you thought!
