The question i have pertains to Gensis ch 1 verse 26

Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fishof the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thingthat creeps on the Earth.

27. So God created man in his image ; in the image of God He created him;male and female he created them

My question is

when God is talking about creating man in Our image, what exactly is he talking about?

Our, as in .. The Holy trinity? or the angels?

It makes mention of Our in verse 26 but in verse 27 it is unisom..Created in His image.

just wanted to get alittle clarification on this...Ive heard it preached a few times before but never paid it any attention until my pastor spoke on it wednesday night.. well read thru it.. he didnt elaborate on that particular scripture.. His message was more towards, God said it , I believe it...

Isnt God Wonderful.. My pastor used this same exact scripture wednesday night..

Soo i get this scripture... It was Always God from the very beginnig..

Who is/was the Our..in vs 26?

or more so, why say our image in vs 26 then say .. his image in vs 27?

Our image as in God the Father, God the Son, God The Holy Spirit? or God and the Angels in Heaven?

Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Philippians 2:6-8 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

Hebrews 2:7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:

Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

To properly assess what is being talked about, we need to compare "in the image of God", and in the "likeness of man".

It is always necessary to first evaluate the verse in question within the context of what was written. Some would debate this, but I believe Jesus gave up all His -omni- qualities when He became man and fully relied upon the Holy Spirit for the display of his power and grace. The purpose of this was to demonstrate to us that we too can be fully reliant upon the work of the Holy Spirit in power and in grace.

So as Jesus became "like sinful man", so we must compare that with the idea that man was created "in the image of God".

Luke 20:36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

I believe the above verse may be one verse that helps link these two concepts. Please note that upon our "resurrection" we shall be made equal with the angels, which of course, are NOT God.

Now because of that word "our", as in "our image", I believe it is speaking specifically of our "triune" nature, just as with the Godhead, and I believe we see that here:

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But now let's read the Genesis verse in context:

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

In addition to the "triune" aspect of Adam, we also see that God gave Adam (and man) "dominion", IOW "power over all that God had created". So even as God has TOTAL power over all that His hands have made, so did God give Adam "POWER over these very things within His creation." We have NO power over angels, but we see that God has retained this power for Himself. Also we have no power over what happens in "heavenly places". However, in doing the work of God, we can ask that He use His POWER within that realm to do various things.

We know that the angels are "ministering spirits" to God's people, and often in scripture we see angels doing just that. We also know that we do not wage war against flesh and blood, but against "powers and principalities in heavenly places". Again in practice this amounts to us placing a plea for heavenly help from the forces that are at work on this earth.

So back to Genesis. I do believe God wanted Adam to be fully reliant upon Him, and had Adam humbled himself, took the blame for his own sin and repented, God would have forgiven him and allowed him to stay in the Garden, but as you know such was not the case. Yet, within the confines of this creation, Adam retained the "POWER over the things of this creation.

An analogy might be "someone made in the image of Donald Trump". Now what does that mean? Physical? Spiritual? Moral? No, it would mean "gifted with the ability to make skads of money", So Adam was gifted with the "POWER over God's creation".

Thank you for the detail explanation.

This is exactly what i was looking for when i posted this topic.

Thats not to say the other posts were not good or appreciated. I had a feeling it had alot to do with the Holy Trinity more so than angels.

everyone has made some excellent points and gave me some further research to do.

The Image of God

Too often, Christians have had a poor understanding of what "God's Image" means to the believer. Preachers have fallen short in helping us understand that image and in doing so, leaving those seeking to regain our image lost on the journey.

When God said, let us make man in our image we must examine what attributes of God are present in His calling us into His image:

First of all, God is scencient, that is He is self aware. God made man self aware.

God is all powerful and has dominion to create, so to did he give man dominion over his creation and stewardship of His creation. he bestowed in our being a power from on high to use for good or evil.

God created us, in His image and "our image".. God is a God of fellowship with the heavenly creatures and so part of our image is born of fellowship.... horizontally with our fellow man and vertically with our God.

God is omniscient, and so to are we born with reason. We have the ability to think and choose.

When we say we are born in the image of God, doing a study of the names of God and understanding who God is.... we can better understand who we are... and we can only look to one for that example... the 2nd Adam... Christ.
