Jesus Wept

How come Jesus wept over the death of His friend Lazarus when He knew He would raise him from the dead?

Also, did Lazarus die a second time?

Maybe He was touched by his friends crying.

Don't forget, he was Lazuarus' great friend.

Maybe their tears made Him weep also.

He knows our feelings.

The text says:

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her, also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled, and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept. And so the Jews were saying, "Behold how He loved him!"

John 11:33-36 NASB

Jesus was troubled in spirit and agitated. The greek sense of the verbs here is anger, not sorrow. His weeping was motivated by something other than sorrow. It was anger and agitation over the effects of sin and the way is was impacthing those around Jesus

I believe that the reason Jesus wept was because of their lack of faith in Him, He being the resurrection and the life. These were His close friends and they have seen many miracles and yet they lacked faith in Him.

Jesus had just had the conversation with Martha and asked her do you believe this?

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

Now look at the passages leading up to where it says Jesus wept:

33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

35 Jesus wept

It says when Jesus saw them weeping He groaned and was troubled, Here He was the Resurrection and they still wept as without hope. I believe that this why Jesus wept, not in sadness that Lazarus had died, but in their lack of faith in Who He was. Just my thoughts.

It is a good study to read this whole chapter to get a good picture of this story of why Jesus wept.

And yes Lazarus did die again.

I think Jesus wept because of the compassion he saw the grieved show for Laz.

I don't think it was anger at all.

Jesus also wept in Luke 19

Luke 19: 41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42 Saying, "If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things [which belong] unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation."

I know I'm the odd ball in this . . .

But what I see is that when Martha came to Jesus, Jesus comforted her with answers - for that's what she needed.

When Mary came to Jesus, she just needed an emotional touch, and that's what He gave her.

But of course, a male would never interpret the passage this way! :thumbsup:

I was always taught that He wept because of their lack of faith, but I really like Neb's answer. I think I will reread this and give it some more thought.
