I beleive, like Jesus went to the spirits in prison . . .

Mark,

Will you expound on why you believe this beyond just citing I Peter 3:19? Are there other scriptural confirmations of this event? Was it different back then for them than it is for those to whom Heb 9:27 applies?

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment"

Will Jesus go (again?) and preach to those who were sent there since then? Will they have the same oportunity afforded them?

Psalm 139:1-8 (emphasis added)

"O LORD, thou hast searched me and known me!

Thou knowest when I sit down and when I rise up; thou discernest my thoughts from afar.

Thou searchest out my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.

Thou dost beset me behind and before, and layest thy hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it.

Whither shall I go from thy Spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

If I ascend to heaven, thou art there! If I make my bed in Sheol, thou art there! "

Given the context of verse 8 (bolded), I don't think it's rational to assume that David is claiming that God is in hell. David here is basically saying, "I cannot escape you."

However, I think it's perfectly logical to believe that God is literally everywhere, which would mean He's in Sheol too! For God to not be able to dwell in Sheol would imply that He cannot dwell there, and therefore He would cease to be omnipotent.

I have to disagree here (although I really like WSB's answer, just a personal opinion/preference). First of all, and please correct me if I'm wrong because I am not certain of this, I believe Sheol is the Hebrew word for the grave, not hell. It just simply means dead and buried in the ground with no afterlife context. Am I wrong?

Also, I agree you could not believe in an omnipotent God who cannot dwell in hell. However, He may choose not to dwell there. I have heard some people argue this is how we have free will. God chooses to remove himself from our presence, thus allowing us to sin and rebel from Him.

I will say what I have always said: Since the Lord Jesus Himself went there, even hell cannot be a place utterly devoid of hope......

I agree, I have always thought this too.

:whistling:

Hell has no hope.

If there was, then it would not be hell.

I think there is a lot to learn from the following verses on the matter.

De 23:12 Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad:

13 And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee

I was actually trying to do a little fishing here to see if I could get some bites with this verse . . . :emot-handshake:

Doesn't it seem strange that such a subject would be address in the Word of God?

To me . . . this verse is truly relevant to the topic at hand.

the gospels record a couple events that add to this case.

concerning the spirits in prison Jesus went to, these are the souls who lived before Jesus' death, that werent resurrected the day he died. they are the unsaved sheol souls of the "TANAKH(OT)". the Gospel account of Abrahams bosom, and the OT scriptures concerning the grave/sheol----(jewish concordance is needed to understand the "grave").

the souls that were not in prison, but attached to Abraham---resurrected the day the curtain/veil tore in half, but did not appear to anyone until Jesus resurrected himself.

Thanks for the reply Mark.

However, maybe its me but it seems as if you just contradicted yourself . . .

based on hebrews 11, the saints of the Tanakh died, by faith in him. He didnt need to preach to them, cause they beleived God, and it was accounted to them as righteousness.

his preaching----wasnt to PRESENT THE GOSPEL---the reason they are in prison is because they DIDNT HAVE FAITH in God the way those attached to Abrahams bosom did.

its no different today. One dies in Faith, or dies eternally separated.

his preaching to the spirits in prison was to CONVICT THEIR HEARTS AND LIVES.

they still await the GWT---which is the 2nd resurrection, and the 2ND DEATH, the Lake of Fire.

1Pe 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison.

1.) Why would Jesus have to go and preach to the disobedient in their prison to convict them?

2.) Doesn

it is appointed once, for man to die.

Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

6.) Are you insinuating that verse 28 is saying that Christ

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
