I think it can sometimes take an older, experienced person to assure a young person - who may strongly want to do it but are hesitant because of the unknown - that their first ever tattoo session will likely turn out okay.

I think you indicated you yourself managed to overcome your initial reluctance for the first one.

@NConly Often they don't ask; the younger generation sometimes thinks that when they get their first tattoo they are doing something new and different.

Whereas if they asked, they would learn from dad or mom that doing it should turn out fine, as it did for them a generation ago.

Also, so that they understand better before they eventually have it done, don't you think it's a good idea for 16/17-year olds to be taken to a tattoo parlor so that they can become better informed about the whole process well beforehand?

A tattoo parlor is naturally an especially good place to talk and ask about tattoos.

most shops I have been in only have two or three and all do ink so it hard for them to have time to spend talking to potential customers but when one has time it is very helpful.

@NConly In the shops, they are most typically ready to serve with the tattoo machine, when the person is booked in,........but hesitant to do a hard sell until the tattooee is truly "ready" and totally informed beforehand........(not considered professional to do a hard sell).

I guess this would indeed be your experience?

oh yes the shops I have been in have all been pro's and no hard sales .

Sounds about right, yes.

I think anyway that, in some areas and in some families where you would tend to be rather comfortable about getting multiple tattoos, the young ppl have likely already been taught by their elders to know what they want when they go in - and where they want it (shoulder blades, etc.) - and the young men and women go in quite decisively and have it done (even repeatedly).

No hard sell at all; the young ppl are driving it themselves, because already it's what they expect.

@SIC Well...I don't know about that, sometimes.

Various young ppl with Bible quotes tattooed that I have talked with (such conversation-starters also...) will likely have gone in to have it done in a pretty determined way, having anticipated well that it will be a very effective conversation-starter.

Like as if they are really strongly saying:

"For me it's really meaningful to have become tattooed".

I would go look in more than one shop at their previous work  might see something one likes or something one could modify to their liking.
