The Sign of Jonah

38Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."

39He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Friday evening-saturday morning-saturday evening-sunday morning

Where's the third day?

The crucifixion was on Wednesday or Thrsday.

Now that should bring a flurry of arguments.

Jesus was crucified on a Wed., not a Fri. What a lot of people forget, or don't know, was that the day following Jesus' crucifixion was a "High Sabbath" not the regular weekly Sabbath. A "High Sabbath" (there are seven of them) occur at each festival and can be on any day of the week. Because many don't make the distinction, it has been assumed that the next day was the regular weekly Sabbath. It was also called "The day of preparation," meaning preparation for the Passover.

Jesus was in the tomb a full 72 hours from Wed evening to Saturday evening. On a lunar calendar, Jesus would have been resurrected at the end of the Sabbath on Saturday evening which would have been the first day of the week in lunar terms.

Unfortunately, too many have read our modern calendar into the Bible, and it has caused some confusion.

I know your probably right but i have one question :)

Jesus was in the tomb a full 72 hours from Wed evening to Saturday evening. On a lunar calendar, Jesus would have been resurrected at the end of the Sabbath on Saturday evening which would have been the first day of the week in lunar terms

Mark 16:2

Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen.

Why does the bible say Early in the morning? Just wondering, I do believe you though just a question :)

The women had to wait until after the Sabbath (Saturday) was over. In addition the guards were posted for three days. There was no reason to go while the guards were posted as they would not be allowed to enter the tomb. The women knew nothing of the earthquake, stone being rolled away, the guards fainting, or the angel.

That is when the women came to the tomb, not when Jesus was resurrected.

They claim, that Christ died on Wednesday, and therefore, John 19:31 would mean the following "Thursday" was this high Sabbath day. Problem is, that is NOT the Biblical definition of a high Sabbath day. A high Sabbath occurred when a feast day (In this case it was the Feast of Unleavened Bread) fell on the 7th day weekly Sabbath. Since the Seventh Day is already considered a Sabbath, and the feast days are considered "annual" Sabbaths, (See Lev. 23:23-38) when they fell on the same day, that day would then be considered a HIGH Sabbath day. A "Thursday" or "5th day" of the week would NEVER be considerd a High Sabbath. That is an absolute impossiblity.

PLUS.. notice this, in Luke 23:56 it states the woman did not prepare the body of Jesus on Friday because they, "...rested the sabbath day according to the commandment." Biblical FACT is, the Commandments speak of the Seventh Day Sabbath, not the annual feast day sabbaths.

PLUS, Christ was put to death on the "preparation day," of the week and the preparation day was never on a Wednesday. In all the pages of biblical history, as well as biblical jurisprudence, the preparation day has always been and will always continue to be Friday. This is graphically confirmed in Mark 15:42-43 where is states, "And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus."

shiloh,

You and I actually agree on something. And not to be overbearing, The jews reckoned a day from sundown to sundown not midnight to midnight.

Matthew 12:40

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

If Jesus died on a Friday afternoon roughly 4 o'clock and rose before sunrise on a Sunday How then could Jesus have been in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights? On the Jewish, Even on our modern-day calendar that would be only 2 days.

The bible states in Mark 16:2 that Jesus

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
