I have appreciated the discussion.

It is surely true that Good Friday-Easter Sunday have nothing to do with the death and resurrection of Our Saviour.

Can someone please point me to a church/denomination which eschews Easter and observes Passover/Unleavened Bread and the other biblical holydays just as Christ and the Apostles did?

Thanks,

Waimahia

I see your argument is quickly running out of gas. You have never dealt with the verse in question. You only state (erroneously) that Jesus HAD risen at the end of the Sabbath. This forced interpretation corrupts the meaning of the Greek and is not supported by any of the English version. Any reputable Greek scholar does not support it. Sabbatarians either do not understand the Greek or knowingly misuse it to try to support a false doctrine.

I have not throughly read every post so please pardon my entering this debate but briefly to offer two literal translations of the main verse in question; Matthew 28:1

The LITV:

But late in the sabbaths, at the dawning into the first of the sabbaths, Mary the Magdalene and the other Mary came to gaze upon the grave

YLT:

And on the eve of the sabbaths, at the dawn, toward the first of the sabbaths, came Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, to see the sepulchre,

This supports BlindSeekers assertion that there were two Sabbaths and also, to some degree, that there was more than one trip by various women to the tomb.

Murdock's translation is interesting,

And in the close [evening] of the sabbath, as the first [day] of the week began to dawn, came Mary of Magdala and the other Mary, to view the sepulchre.

It is difficult to step away from tradition, especially if tradition is held as authoritative by

I'd just like to offer the comments and chart at this link. What do you think?

:P

I also agree with this chart. :P

There is an aspect of this discussion that makes this all very easy to understand...

When was Jesus laid in the earth? Most would agree that he died about 3pm and was buried (in the earth) BEFORE 6pm (ie. before sundown) when the next day (Passover) began. THIS should be when the counting begins.

before sunset (Nisan 14) to before sunset (Nisan 15) = 1 night and 1 day.

before sunset (Nisan 15) to before sunset (Nisan 16) = 2nd night and 2nd day.

before sunset (Nisan 16) to before sunset (Nisan 17) = 3rd night and 3rd day.

Before sunset on Nisan 17 fulfills the sign of Jonah.

Before sunset on Nisan 17 thus is the time of the resurrection (according to scripture).

Then plug in your days of the week and count backwards. Since Sunday before sundown is too late, and Friday before sundown is too early (unanimously), we start from Saturday...

Saturday to Friday = 1

Friday to Thursday = 2

Thursday to Wednesday before sundown =3.

Now for the aspect of this discussion that is missing.... Was the stone rolled away so Jesus could come out? or so others could see that he is no longer among the dead? I submit that Jesus was raised from the dead BEFORE THE STONE WAS ROLLED AWAY. And AFTER HE WAS RESURRECTED the events of Matthew 28:1f took place.

NO place in scripture is Jesus said to have been raised on Sunday. ALL references are that He is ALREADY UP. Sunday was when he was first SEEN by anyone (Mary Magdalene being the first to see him). There were no Bibles until about the 16th century (+or - 100yrs). By then doctrine (right or wrong) had been ingrained in pictures, stories, music, etc. which would have its INFLUENCE on how the new Bibles would have been PUNCTUATED. Mark 16:9 is punctuated with the comma coming after the word WEEK.

"Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene."

"Now when Jesus was risen, early the first day of the week he appeared first to Mary Magdalene."

Amazing how the placement of one little comma can change the meaning of what is written.

Also, regarding whether or not Jesus' body saw "any" corruption (none, some, or total) is rather mute to this discussion. He was raised with a NEW BODY. There are many people who have died and there bodies have seen total decay, but they will receive their NEW BODY in due time. :P

just my $.02

....Also, there's a Psalm about God not letting "his holy one see decay" (quoted in Acts 2:25-31), which seems to be pretty conclusive evidence that even his mortal body did not decay. (It wouldn't make sense to say an immortal body did not see decay, since that would be impossible anyway.)

My understanding of the meaning "letting his holy one see decay" was simply another way of saying that God would RAISE "his holy one" from the dead, in contrast to the alternative (not raising him) which would result in him seeing total decay. I believe that his body DID see "some" decay while in the tomb - he was dead, that's what happens to dead people! Decay doesn't happen all at once but occurs over a period of time. kinda like an apple - it does not become rotten (decay) overnight. But just as Lazarus (who saw some decay) was not only raised up from death, he was healed, ie. his health was totally restored. Same thing with Jesus - his body saw some decay - only God raised him after 3 days in stead of 4 as in the case of Lazarus.

However, when Lazarus was raised from the dead by Jesus, Lazarus was not raised with an immortal body. He eventually died again, and is awaiting the return of Jesus Christ his Lord. Jesus, on the other hand, was raised by God "incorruptible". He was raised to eternal life. His mortal body was "changed" to an immortal/incorruptible body. Lazarus will be raised again (in the future at the second coming). Then Lazarus' corruptible body will be changed to an incorruptible body (like the one Jesus now has). Until then, Lazarus awaits the return of Christ (when this will all take place).

So does anyone have an issue with Palm Sunday really being Saturday? I can't think of any reason it had to be a Sunday, especially by counting backwards from the events of Preparation Day.

I agree with a Saturday entry into Jerusalem - ie. Palm Sunday on Saturday.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
