Question regarding angels and other spiritual beings

Hi worthy forums. I got a question. I was reading through Ezekiel and then through Revelations, and they described these very wierd creatures with 6-12 wings and creatures that had eyes covering them all over.

Are we to take this as they literally look like this? And if not, what is the symbolic reason behind them? Also was wondering how you can tell when something is speaking meterphorically or literally in the Bible? A lot of times it's a bit confusing as to what really is happening and what isn't. (i.e. the harlot seen in Revelations, I am assuming she is symbolic, but I'm not exactly sure.)

The creatures in Revelation are generally symbolic and many of the terms and symbols of Revelation are used in other parts of Scripture as symbolic. For example, marks on the body are used in the Old Testament as symbolic just as they are in Revelation.

How do you determine if something is metaphorical when reading books other than the Bible? Although the Bible is a very special book many of the same rules of literature apply to the Bible as they do to any other books. Obviously the Bible is written in different genres and there is much material out there from accomplished theologians that can help us and guide us. RC Sproul has a nice little book entitled Knowing Scripture that you would find helpful.

If it's a dream or vision, chances are the language is more symbolic.

But as for the appearance of the creatures - it could be either or both (actual vs. metaphorical). I mean, the Lord could have allowed Ezekiel to see the actual winged creatures before His throne as they are, or see them in a way Ezekiel's eyes could comprehend. But until we see them ourselves, we can't know for sure, can we?

I always thought they were literal. In Daniel, each vision (almost) is followed by an explanation of the symbols. But these are just listed as a matter-of-fact part of heaven.

St. Worm- I like your comment about the rules of literature and grammer apply to the bible, I think people forget that sometimes.
