Fish,

That would be great if we lived in the theocracy under a mosaic economy with the hope of a promised land if we kept the covenant.  I live in a democracy under a grace economy and live with the fulfillment of the promises everyday.  Its great to sit in my favorite local coffee shop and over delicious latte with just a hint of irish creme debate with close friends.  Its another thing to sermonize that fellow believers are pagans for putting up a tree and living the excitement of the season with their children.

And who ordained that "excitement of the season"? Did Jesus? Did the apostles? No.

Inevitably, when one draws a parallel from the OT to use as an example of how Christians should live and view God today, he or she will be accused of being for legalism and a "mosaic economy".

To not see how the many OT examples point us toward a right relationship with God today is to flat out ignore scripture. It was good enough for Jesus to use in his teaching.

This age of grace should not be confused with being an age of "anything goes" in our worship of God. Even in an age of grace, the Eternal God says there are still plenty of ways to worship Him in vain (see Mark 7).

Enjoy your latte.  :exclaimation:

Fish,

Now wait a minute you were using an injunction for Israel to stay away from idolatry and applying that to the celebration of Jesus birth during the month of December.  Using that same logic you can prohibit almost any part of secular society.   There was a specific reason that Israel was to be seperate in every way from the nations around them.  The mission was to bring the Christ to the Earth.  Its a tremedous stretch applying these to the Church.  Would you eat the meat that has offered as a sacrifice to a pagan god?

Not sure where you were going on this one, but no, Steve, I wouldn't eat meat that was knowingly offered in sacrifice to an idol.

Regarding your argument that almost any part of secular society could be included in my analogy, that's simply not true. It's the incorporation of worship of the true God in the middle of pagan festivities and tradition that I believe God has a problem with. To deny that Christmas is shrouded in paganism is simply to deny history, Steve. And God says to us today, just as He said to Israel: "Leave Me out of the pagan practices of the world! You are not of the world, church!"

Furthermore, I believe the OT has much to teach us in how we should live with one another and how the church should worship God. I see that you disagree with that and would urge you to begin a study on the topic, beginning with I Corinthians 10:6,11. See where that takes you, my friend.   :thumb:

Well Fish in my ESV it takes me about a page back to chapter 8 where the Apostle states that an idol has no real existence and that eating food offered to idols does not change our relationship to God...as it would have under the law (v. 4,8).

So basically what you take out of the passage is it's ok to worship God with a hint of paganism because now we are under grace and God's utter contempt for any pagan practices or rituals doesn't really matter, because hey, we should just all love one another. Who gives a hoot about how God desires to be worshiped? Who gives a hoot that we celebrate a season full of pagan rituals and pretend that the holiday is biblically endorsed?

Sorry, I disagree.

Like someone on this post said earlier:

The world absolutely loves Christmas, but they hate Jesus. Using these facts alone tells me I want nothing to do with the Christmas holiday.

Am I happy my Savior was born and lived to die for me? You better believe it! But I don't need any pagan practices from centuries ago and carried on into today's godless society telling me how I should commemorate that most precious of gifts.

Fish,

What the passages clearly states is that a believer's relationship to God does not change if he participates in the buying and eating of temple idol meat.   Kinda makes this whole December thing look like small fries.

Then we will have to agree to disagree then. Doesn't surprise me, though. Does it you?

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
