Scientology is a religion that has received a lot of media coverage lately. That is mostly due to the fact that some rather high-profile entertainers belong to the Church of Scientology. John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Tom Cruise, Jenna Elfman, and Nicole Kidman are a sampling of these entertainers who have gone on record as being Scientologists. In fact, Tom Cruise recently made headlines by pleading the Scientology case before the German Government. The practice of Scientology is currently forbidden in Germany now. Given that Scientologists will tell prospective converts that they can continue to attend whatever church they wish, it is important to highlight the non-Christian beliefs of this cult. Furthermore, as one ascends into the high levels of training in Scientology, they find that this cult is anything but friendly toward Christianity.

Scientology was started by sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, and evolved from his initial concept of Dianetics. The Scientology religion is based exclusively upon L. Ron Hubbard's research, writings and recorded lectures -- all of which constitute the Scriptures of the religion. These encompass more than 500,000 pages of writings, nearly 3,000 recorded lectures and more than 100 films. He is the only source of the religion, and he has no successor. A fundamental doctrine of the Scientology religion is that spiritual freedom can be attained only if the path outlined in these works is followed without deviation, for it is an intensively researched and workable route.

Scientology denies that salvation comes from God. As their website says:

Ah yes, the "Religion" of Scientology... Its actually based completely off a bet that Mr. Hubbard couldn't make a Religion... He based the spiritual aspects off movies, and brainwashing other people by use of hitting them in the head with blunt objects is in there as well.

An excellent book about this is "The barefaced Messiah!

It contains quotes from former scientologists and some of Hubbards family. It lays out quite clearly the egomaniac that the founder was.

It is a hard book to find as the scientologists buy them all up and trash them . It is also out of print. Try a public library. They can't trash them there.

This cult plays to the oldest lie. That man can be like G-d.

The book is a good read and I highly reccomend it.

I haven't heard of Xenu, though I do remember Mork (of Mork and Mindy) used to run around saying "Nanu" all of the time! Though it isn't comprehensive in dealing with Scientology, a good book to find is The Challenge of the Cults and New Religions. I don't remember who wrote it, but it from a Christian standpoint and I think the author is connected with the Dallas Theological Seminary. In the book, he takes on the eastern religions, JW's, Mormons, Oneness Pentecostal, Wicca, Scientology, and Satanism and probably a few others. It is amazing that in most of these "religions" you find the common theme of working your way to God and/or a higher spiritual plane. To top it off, much of these "religions" do not deny Christ existed, but twist Him around to a point that they are not describing the Christ we love, know, and serve. They say that Jesus was a mere mortal (no virgin birth, etc.) who reached a higher spiritual plane and was "indwelt" by the "Christ spirit" and that we can all reach that same place and get that "Christ spirit" within us. They say that Jesus was a great philosopher, but no better than Buddha, Confucius, etc. Very good book if you can find it.
