Hundreds of millions of Americans will have until 2013 to be outfitted with new digital ID cards, the Bush administration said on Thursday in a long-awaited announcement that reveals details of how the new identification plan will work.

The announcement by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offers a five-year extension to the deadline for states to issue the ID cards, and proposes creating the equivalent of a national database that would include details on all 240 million licensed drivers.

According to the draft regulations (PDF), which were required by Congress in the 2005 Real ID Act and are unlikely to assuage privacy and cost concerns raised by state legislatures:

It is my opinion that this is "the beginning of "can't buy/can't sell unless you bear the mark".

However, I know these sayings have become oft repeated cliches, but they have never been more relevant to America than they are now. Do you hear, as I do, "the sound of the East German national anthem being played in the background" when you read about real id? I am not hesitant to write any of this either as I don't believe ANYONE could use any logical arguments and come down on the side of "real id", thinking it is a good thing.

I rather doubt if "this administration really will be reined in by the average citizen" because there are so many people who are willing to bow before anything the government does and justify it by saying "this is for our safety - because of 9.11". And yes, they really believe that! Though it has yet to be explained how, exactly, this will thwart terrorism.

Writing to your congressman is a good idea, but it getting a little late for that and I suspect the infrastructure for "the id card" is already building up. The legislation for this was passed on 11 May 2005, snuck in on the coattails of a military spending Bill. The reason for doing this was to crush any debate or dissent, and it worked very well. Afterall it's difficult for politicians to vote against money that will go to the troops in Iraq and tsunami relief. The funds cover ammunition, weapons, tracked combat vehicles, aircraft, troop housing, death benefits, and so on.

So here's hoping that the average Joe (or Jo Ann Bloggs) will not accept it, but I have my reservations. Wouldn't it be nice if I'm wrong though?

Since when is the can't buy/can't sell period a bad thing for those who believe in the immenent return of Christ? This doesn't concern me at all. Its just an I.D. card that allows people to accurately I.D. you. If you DON"T want people to I.D. you...then don't get a stinkin' I.D. card!!!

It makes NO sense to me for people to want an ID card (and all its associated privileges) but then act indignant that people will be able to identify them with it.

I don't think you quite understand what this is all about. It is not as simple as a choice whether or not to get an id card/not get an id card.

However, I don't see how it can do this because DHS is now talking about "issuing a driving certificate to undocumented immigrants because they do not have the documentation necessary to get a real ID card/drivers licence". And if you are tempted to believe that it will actually affect terrorism, I'm sure that most "terrorists" will make sure that they have a genuine "real id card".

Well, certainly that is not a bad thing for those who believe in the imminent return of Christ, but of course he will have to be returning within (say) a month of implementation of these rules. How long do you suppose you would be able to survive without being able to buy or sell (or travel)?

According to what I have been reading, it is anticipated that a lot of Americans have birth certificates which are not "electronically verifiable" and also do not have the "required documentation" (this is AMERICAN BORN people as well as LEGAL immigrants), so such people "would not be able to get drivers licences", and therefore would not be able to board aircraft or enter Federal buildings. I'm sure there is far more to it than that, but it is late and I'm already going cross-eyed reading the information.

I said it before and I'll say it again. What use is a life where you have to carry round a card that marks you as a slave to your master - the state, not God, but the state!?

You cannot belong to the Lord anymore if you embrace this system as you have taken on a new master - the state - and you cannot serve two masters.

As for the ACLU, sure they may have their faults (nothing is perfect) but it looks like now they might be the only ones prepared to stand between your freedom and a life of tracking and slavery.
