Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem!

re: Depicting Angels as Women

Italian painters painted angels with the look of Mary. They did this to give her reverence for being the Mother of Jesus.

From that point on artists painted angels with women faces.

Well, that could be because we girls are prettier (as the Lord made us that way) and make better angels in portraits. :P

I believe that when God commanded that we should not make any graven images of the things which are in the heavens or under the earth He didn't just mean "those things which are carved from stone or wood." A "graven image" is anything which depicts those things - regardless of medium.

I believe that pictures or depictions of angels are in violation of that commandment.

Is it possible that angels are genderless and using men was simply to best way to communicate what they are. (Men are often associated with courage, strength, protection, and while I certainly won't go into the merit of that association, it would explain male angels).

Or does the bible specifically tell us that angels have genders?

The angels spoken of in the Bible are male.

Well, they appeared to be male.
