I supported the idea until the text of the bill was released. Once released though...I dropped all support. It's like they took all the negative aspects of both sides and put them together.

I wish I were more qualified to speak about politics, because I really want to develop an essay that explains how we are leading towards totalitarianism. The problem that we see in the government is that we keep electing idiots. We elect people that say what we want to hear, but lack the intelligence to actually put forth a real solution.

I have read Plato's Republic and honestly, he's a prophet of sorts when it comes to politics. He says that democracy precedes autocracy, and that in the final stages of democracy you see a lowering of the intelligence of those in charge and an increase of "friendly rhetoric" (what I described previously).

Think about it - Candidate #1: holds a PhD in political science, has already been a governor of a state and turned it around, but is a mediocre speaker and lacks in the looks department

Candidate #2: graduated from a state school, was a governor of a state and went through a scandals and left office with a 42% approval rating, but is an AMAZING speaker and could be a model

AK, I think the problem is that we believe the crap promises that politicians tell us to get them elected, then once they get in power, they dont do what they promised us.

This is true. This whole emphasis on appearance really came to light during the Kennedy/Nixon debate. Kennedy was suave, calm and cool, Nixon was antsy, sweaty, and had a five o'clock shadow. This was the first nationally televised debate back in the late '50's and to this day some believe it cost Nixon that election.

And you are right; people elect the boob that tells them what they want to hear. So we could say that we get the government we deserve.

Let's talk Plato sometime in another thread; I would love that. He is fascinating to be sure.

Were young voters the ones who wrote the bill? Were they the ones who drafted it?
