Irreverence for God's name...

I'm seeing in some posts on this board where some people post God with a dash in the middle of His name. Shown as G-d. That is the only word in the posts that has that dash in it. What is the point of putting a dash in God's name? That shows irreverence for God. It shows to me that your taking His name in vain. Why is this done or allowed on here?...

I wondered the same thing, actually. And the only thing I can come up with is that the people who do are thinking they're staying reverent to Him because they won't even dare to mutter his name -- but still, God tells us to say his name, to confess it and everything, so I don't know why, either.

Actually placing a dash in the name God is a sign of reverence. For jewish people, they regard God's name as so holy, it is not even to be spelled by us.

It also has its roots in Old Testament books when God is spoken of as Jehovah. The vowels were removed as a sign of reverence, hence you were left with JHVH. So, I believe the reverence of God's name as such us by Messanic Jews (people of Jewish descent who believe that Jesus Christ is the Messiah.)

Actually there are no vowels printed in the Hebrew OT at all. The masorites came along later and added vowel pointings to indicate what the vowels were

There are two separate issues here. One is the legal issue of erasing God's Name; the other is the emotional issue of showing the Name proper respect.

First the legal side: The Torah exhorts us to destroy idolatry, and from here we learn the injunction not to erase the name of God. (see Deuteronomy 12:3-4)

As EricH pointed out it is actually a sign of reverence. In Hebrew, God's Name YHVH is ineffable (unpronouncable). Jewish people make no attempt to pronounce His Name. Whenever YHVH appears in the text, they replace it with Adonai or the term "Ha Shem" ("The Name") so that they avoid taking His Name in vain.

Taking the Lord's name in vain refers to a vain oath. What was meant was that we were not make a false promise or swear falsely by His Name.

I don't want to start an argument or anything, but I'm wondering about all the times in the Bible that tell us to "Call on the name of the Lord".

Isaiah 12:4 In that day you will say:

"Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name;

make known among the nations what he has done,

and proclaim that his name is exalted.

Psalm 116:13 I will lift up the cup of salvation

and call on the name of the LORD.
