I have a relative who made a christian commitment about 10 years ago.

She has since stopped fellowshipping.

I've noticed she swears a lot when she is frustrated - particularly using

the "F" word.

I find this very offensive.

Do you feel as though I should correct her(in love) about her swearing

or just let it go?

Is this acceptable for a christian?

Shalom,

What does G-D say about it?

Colossians 3:

8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

James 1:

26If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person

Hi,

Before I became a christian I found swearing offensive and that was not because I never heard it, as a child growing up my Mother swore frequently probably more than my Dad, I grew to hate it it didn't sound nice.

As a christian I find it offensive as Gods word does tell us that foul language is wrong. How will the world see we are different if there is no difference. :whistling:

It is quite simple. If you find it offensive ask her not to say those things around you.

Yes I agree. It is offensive.

However, you also ask what you should do about this lady swearing. If you find it offensive, then I think that you should say something to her about this. Hopefully she will stop swearing - at least in your presence.

Swearing and cussing is wrong. The Bible has a lot to say against it. I copied this from God Questions:

http://www.gotquestions.org/cussing-swearing.html

Question: "Is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse?"

Answer: It is definitely a sin to swear (curse, cuss, etc.). The Bible makes this abundantly clear. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." 1 Peter 3:10 declares, "For, Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech." James 3:9-12 summarizes the issue, "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water."

Why is it a sin to cuss / swear / curse? We should only allow good and positive things to come out of our mouths - things that will encourage other people (Ephesians 4:29). It is not right for praising and cursing to come out of the same mouth (James 3:9-12).

One of the first things my husband did when he accepted Christ was to clean up his language. Now he sees how offencisve his words used to be and is offended by foul language. He won't even watch movies that have cussing in them. This makes it hard to get movies, but it is much more pleasing to the Lord that we fill our minds with things that edify us.

Guest at the foot

Curseing is a product of the OLD man, good and positive speaking comes from the New man, when she has a conversion her speaking will change all naturally. Let your light shine that she may see, and pray for her.

I agree, excellent posts by the way. Pray for her and be a good example. If you do confront her do with love and respect. The more you show Christ through your actions, the more others will be influenced toward Him.

We are to show our brothers and sisters where they are going wrong, in love. You can remind her that her heart is growing cold toward Christ by this verse.

Matthew 15:18-19

But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
