I grew up with th KJV. As an adult I've tried to read other translations but always went back to KJV. I found in other watered down versions it lacked the "power of the punch" in many scriptures and passages.

The NIV is the version that irks me the most. Compare this verse:

1Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. (KJV)

1Cor 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (NIV)

Now salvation isn't an ongoing process. Works, ect isn't necessary for salvation only belief that one cannot save himself and needs Jesus Christ. Wouldn't you agree that this would confuse someone, especially a babe in Christ?

My apologies, Cobalt, with so many "KJV-Onlyists" beating the drum and shouting the inerrancy of the KJV it is sometimes hard to see where someone's heartfelt beliefs stop and someone else's sarcasm begins.

The NIV is not meant to be a direct, word-for-word translation of the Bible. It is meant to be a "thought-for-thought" translation of what the translators believed the writers were trying to tell us. Conversely, the King James Version, (while an excellent translation) does have it's flaws. Primary among there were the very limited number of documents available to the translators for comparison, the fact that the last 6 verses of Revelation were missing entirely (which had to be retranslated back into Greek, then into English), as well as words added by the translators to "clarify" certain verses and meanings (ever wonder just why a lot of words are italicized in the KJV? This is why; the italicized words were not in the original copies they worked with. One of the problems of translating from one language to another is not getting an exact translation, in many cases).

I have no problem at all with the KJV; it is a version I have used for years and still read frequently. For a more "word-for-word" translation I often go to the NASB or, if I want to compare closer to the original languages, I use the Interlinear Bible, which cites the original languages (grammar and all), Strong's numbers, word-for-word breakdown of the verse from it's original language, and an easier to read translation in the margin.

Moved from the Outer Court to General Discussion. Most people don't have a problem with the translation. The problem arises when people try to say that the KJV is the only valid version. People are not disagreeing with the version. They are disagreeing with the stand of people who are over-zealous regarding the version

A wonderful version I have been using lately is the Holeman. It has the word for word literalness of the NASB with the readability of NIV

That the KJV is viewed to be the inerrant Word of God must be entirely by faith, for we do not have the original manuscripts to compare the translation.

Therefore I would submit that it is really no better or worse, or any different, than any other translation which is received equally "by faith" as the Word of God.
