Artificial Intelligence is downright scary ...
walla299 replied to George's topic in General Discussion
I think there's a reason for computers/A.I. and all to have a bad rap at times in Star Trek, Terminator, The Matrix, just to name a few. Seems like a warning - the computers/a.i./robots always wind up trying to kill everyone, take over a ship, or a planet. Yah, definitely a warning. Don't forget Jurassic Park. -
As I said, it's really not a concern for me. I've learned at age 61 that the younger folks are going to follow the heard and one of the current "things" is tattoos. It's similar with beards and skinny leg jeans. That's their choice, but its not mine. I've never had a tatt, and I doubt I ever will unless the Lord has a reason for me to. My only concern would be for believers - we are to glorify the Lord in all we do, so getting a worldly tatt is probably not a great idea. Our (now) retired pastor was once a biker before he got saved and has some "leftover" tatts from the earlier life that have opened doors for witnessing in the past. Jesus can take just about anything in our lives and use it for the kingdom - we just have to let Him.

Never saw any need for a tattoo and never really wanted one. Seems that among some younger folks its in fashion - yet so is getting them removed and both processes are painful and expensive. If someone wants to get one that's on them its not a concern for me.

I served in the Air Force 1980-1995, stationed in the US, (West) Germany, and UK.

I thought that was just "Easter is Evil." There's usually a few of those threads too. As a kid the egg thing never made any sense to me . . .

Good one, Patriot21.

I'll bet that was the same fruit cake that my grandmother could never get rid of . . . darn things are eternal.

I'm pretty sure that would be a good fit for the "Math is Evil" thread that's around here somewhere. On Christmas: Keep Christ at the center at all times. Then celebrate the holiday or not. It really is a choice each of us have the freedom to make.

Lighthearted Question: about Christmas
walla299 replied to tim_from_pa's topic in Do you want to just ask a question?
I had a professor when I was in uni that said something related to this. Gotta love freshman science courses. "Everyone goes home for the holidays, picks up various bugs in their travels, shares them with family and friends, then returns and thus turns the campus into a huge post-holiday petri dish. Everyone gets to share in what everyone caught along the way." Experience shows he was right. The holiday travel season must be a real blast if you're a virus. -
There are denominations out there that believe this but it is not a salvation issue. I usually point out that Paul makes it clear that it is the Holy Spirit who decide who gets what gift in 1 Corinthians 12-14.

You forgot the humidity, hurricanes, and mosquitoes . . . and the occasional iguana dropping on your head. Don't get me started on the great big snakes . . .

Early 70's in east Texas: Dad cussing and snarling when he couldn't find gas for less than 30 cents/gallon. ($0.35/gl was just robbery!) CDs came along in the early 80s . . . saw one of the first CD players was on sale for almost $1500 if memory serves. Read that in an electronics magazine. Our family avoided the oil embargo by being in another country! The USA still has some of the cheapest fuel on the planet. The 70s were no better or worse than today. It was what we did with the time we had back then when technology hadn't infiltrated so much of our lives. That can be turned off though and we can still spend time with others like back then.

That sounds . . . very Klingon. In a "Today is a good day to die." kind of way. "Death for the believer is really just a change of address." -- no idea who said that, but they are right.

I forget. Are we supposed to vote for the Giant Meteor / Killer Asteriod for 2022 or 2024?

I heard it said years ago that the Bible is nothing if not honest in the stories of faith: the heroes are shown as what they were - fallen human beings who were not "perfect" but still followed the Lord. They are show as it were "warts and all" and it should be an encouragement to us because they stumbled from time to time just like us - but God always gave them another chance when they repented.

where is the annual "halloween is evil" thread?
walla299 replied to Ghostdog's topic in General Discussion
The only good thing I can think of about Halloween is the day after . . . when all that candy goes on sale. Time to stock up! -
Nothing wrong with enjoying donuts, coffee, chips, or other things - but there is a principle of not letting it control you or cause others to stumble. A doughnut or cheeseburger every now and then shouldn't be a problem. Eating them every day could definitely cause problems.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. -- 1 Corinthians 2:9 That just seems to fit.

I had to get a new (or new to me) vehicle when my old one quit in May 2021. Changing out the transmission on a 14 year old car with 200k miles just wasn't worth it. The choice was pretty easy: 1. EVs: too expensive. Not even on the radar. I live in Arizona and charging can be a problem with the distances we encounter here. Also, I can't help but feel the battery and other tech isn't quite "there" yet. So I'm willing to wait. 2. Hybrids: good possibility for short trips & longer road trips. Great mileage and no recharging worries. Good transition vehicle until the EV tech and charging infrastructure get there. Problem: there were none available - anywhere in the state - and there was a long waiting list. That makes it really impractical when you need a vehicle now. 3. Standard Engine vehicle: New actually turned out to be cheaper than buying used. First time in my life that ever happened. Problem: None. I live in an apartment and there are no outlets to plug anything into outside, much less the heavy circuits needed to charge an EV. There's a gas station literally across the street for a fill up if needed, and finding fuel is not a problem for a road trip - but find the money for it could be an issue! Love the massage idea: but you're right. You can do jobs with an F250 that you can't with an EV just yet.

Is CNN getting a major makeover?
walla299 replied to WorthyBot's topic in Worthy Watch / Worthy Insights
In other words: The low ratings have finally convinced management that perhaps they need to be something other than the Propaganda Ministry for the Marxists. We'll see . . . -
The only real answer is national repentance and revival. The only thing that will make society's ills go away is when Christ changes peoples' hearts. Changed hearts are the only thing that will truly cause changed behavior, and only Christ can change a heart.

Had to figure something like this was going to happen given the hole the Democrats have dug themselves into. The Roe decision was a bit of a surprise, but if it wasn't that it would have been something else.
-
This reminds me of what Paul said about law (rules) only working on the outside of us and not changing the heart. Only Jesus can change a heart. I'm not implying anyone is loose or any of that, but that line reminded me of how law does nothing to change our hearts - but it does drive us to the Savior.

Good. The Propaganda Ministry, er, lame, ah, main stream media will likely be shrieking like mad/it's the end of the world tomorrow.
