Well Onelight, you know with our recent chat discussions that I have confessed that I need some cleaning up to do on my own self. My dear friend, we all do. Do not feel alone in this, for I myself am always in the process of "cleaning up". I really enjoy the scripture you brought to this thread! That all depends on what you call Christian Meditation. I call it examining myself. "Meditation" is a new-agey word. I can understand why you'd avoid using it or even thinking, but the description you provided is a perfect fit. Meditation, in and of itself, is really nothing to be afraid of. Like yoga, it need not have any religious connotation whatsoever. I also understand why the practise of yoga would intimidate you as a Christian ... Indefence of all things biblical and Christ-like, some people get a little hypervigilant, a little paranoid and xenophobic.

I also understand meditation very well, well studied in New Age, and I am also not paranoid of foreign ideas. I really don't know how you got all that our of what I asked. I was truly asking what Christian meditation was to you.

I go to my study and pray with my Bible and read and stop and close my eyes and pray and let the Peace from the Word wash over me... There is nothing 'new age' about it... it is the only way I can feel the closeness that I need to feel to speak with God. Psalm 19:14 14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I've had occasions in prayer where I have asked God to search my heart. I got it from Psalm 139: 23-24. " 23 Search me God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting." I know our own hearts can deceive us. Even in examining our own hearts, we need the help of the Holy Spirit. Blessings...South

But is a good thing to do inlight of the fact that Scripture tells us to examine ourselves. Thanks for the reminder to do so, Onelight. As opposed to a contemplation of emptiness, nirvana, a mantra or koan (Zen riddle). I refer to the essential difference between Eastern and Western spirituality. PS there is an AWESOME (and longish) sermon by Paul Washer on sermonaudio (am I allowed to link to the site? ) that has become quite famous, titled 'Examine yourselves'. It takes people through the five tests of faith found in 1 John. Shall I quote them?

I come to it and read and see my failings and know I need to change.. I see where I come up short... the next step is for me to not just see His charge but to walk in it... to add a little to the previous post... Psa 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. Psa 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. Psa 19:9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. Psa 19:10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Psa 19:11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Psa 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.
