What a horrible wreck! I mean, have you ever seen this kind of destruction of an aircraft from a "taking off" crash?

Most air crashes are horrendous - but this does look bad. These were some comments about the plane itself, which apparently just disintegrated...

The three-engine Tupolev 154 is the aging workhorse of Russia's commercial fleet, at one time carrying about half of all Russian air passengers.

It was designed as the Soviet counterpart to the Boeing 727 and the European-made Trident, but with the added ability to operate from short, rough runways. About 1,000 were produced. Although a popular aircraft, it has had a checkered history and has been involved in about 30 air disasters since it was created in 1968.

Aviation analyst Kieran Daly told CNN said numerous Tupolevs have been lost since the aircraft was introduced in the 70s. "Having said that there were many of them built, and they have been in service in quite difficult parts of the world for a very long time. But there have been a lot of these Tupolev 154s lost, quite a few in Iran."

The last plane crash in Iran involving a Tupolev plane occurred in 2006, according to the Web site airdisaster.com.

That seems to be quite a few disasters of this type of plane...

Or Obama... does anyone know where he was when this happened? Does he have an alibi?

Not Israel, on our news channel tonight they blamed the USA and Britain for the sanctions that do not allow them to purchase new planes. The fact that they can get spares from Russia seems to be a side issue, but one expert said that there are a lot of spare parts for these Russian planes on the black market that are not originals but are "counterfeit" parts.

There does seem to have been a spate of air accidents just lately. Wonder what is going on?

Usually problems with maintenance or maintenance procedures. I'm helping a friend rebuild a Bonanza and to do so properly every little single thing has to be done very carefully and in prescribed ways. Any shortcuts result in problems later, and problems in the air are usually bad, and in this case really bad.

Lets not forget our common humanity and just give in to tunnel vision about everything that happens.

Probably if we saw the grief and pain of the victim's families, children etc we would be sad, despite holding a fixed political view.

Oh, goodness, you're not suggesting O'Bama had anything to do with it, are you? He has enough to keep him busy in O'Bama land.
