I wonder how this works in an international world? This is an american law, does that mean that american pastors can record something in Australia, and broadcast it on the internet, and be safe from prosecution?

Exterminating genuine hate crimes is a great idea, silencing christians against sin is the devil's idea.

Pastors here can preach against homosexuality. The law is against incitement to violence against certain groups.

Bowing out of this conversation before I spoil an otherwise sunny happy day. GBU.

And fez follows gracefully

Well, I'm following too but, none too gracefully, I tripped over that 800 pound gorilla on the board.

hi ya all, im probably behind the eight ball here in NZ as we get your programmes months later sometimes, but today while flicking channels, for some reason i decided to watch some of Ellen Whats her name, the lesbian, who has a tv show.

Anyway they were talking about getting the hate law in place and i suddenly thought yeah, they are calling it love to accept sin and that anyone who rejects the behaviour of others is a hater. This is more than being against true hate or true hate speech with which i myself agree, but that no one can speak out against others choice of sexual behaviour or anything disagreeable to them.

I know none of this is new but Satan is now more than ever coming as an angel of light/love and using the media to portray Christians as haters. Its the "left behind" movie in reality. Hold on folks its not long till we get to go home, and for some it in the west it will mean being martyred.

Actually, there is a hate crime law towards the homesexuals but it has not yet gotten through congress at this time but as soon as it does it will head to the President's desk more than likely to be signed by Obama.

We already have hate crimes on the books that protect certain groups but don't have pacific laws for homosexuals yet.

As far as I know there are hate crimes on the books right now that protect the miniority if you was to commit crimes against someone because they were a minority then the punishment would be greater than if the crime was commited against someone who did not have a protected status.

What it comes down to is that some people believe that if they speakout if they have a protective status they can be charged with a hate crime. This would be especially troublesome because you can have preachers being charged with a hate crime simply by preaching the Word. Obvious that would violate our right to free speech but given the fact we have activist judges on the court we have no assurance that our rights will be protected.

Knowing all of this I am one who believes in free speech very strongly. Also I believe that as Americans if we would use the free speech that our Constitution has given us then they can't take it away only if you let them silence us.

I know that I have a right to free speech and I do not have to change.

As Lady C said, that she did not have to change what she labled Ellen as I have called her the same thing all the way back to her first days on TV and that was Ellen degenerate and I will not change that name either.

The constitution gives you the right to free speech. So what. God commands you to temper your speech...

Col 4:5-6 (ESV)
Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Rom 12:18 (ESV)
If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Mat 12:36-37 (ESV)
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

Eph 4:29 (ESV)
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

One day you will stand before God and be asked to justify why you called one of His creation "degenerate" and I don't think "But I have the constitutional right to free speech" is going to cut it with Him.

The fact that you know the generally accepted meaning that people have when they hear the nickname 'degenerate' applied to Ellen Degeneres, and still attempt to defend your right to call her that, speaks volumes.

Would it be a crime to speak out against adult brother/sister marriage?

It is not a crime to speak out against "anything" even the incestuos relationship of brother, sister marriage you mentioned. In America we have a Constitutional Right to free speech for we are not a socialist country who do not have free speech. But I am so surprised at the Americans who do not know this or who no longer follow the fact we do still have the Bill of Rights. I kind of think there are those who have given up their rights to free speech as some of the things said, before are no more like they are already being conditioned for this to happen instead of standing on the side of freedom.

For the only crime would be "Not" to speak out against the incestuous relationship.

What does this have to do with the legality of speaking out against deviate behaviour? As for me calling Ellen a degenerate, Romans 1 calls her a reprobate if God calls her that then I am safe to call her a degenerate.

Oh really? There are dozens of scripture and this is just one.

Psa 37:30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.

Here's another

Psa 39:1 To the choirmaster: to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence."

And....

Pro 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Oh how I have to watch my tongue every minute of every day. I cannot judge here, because I have fallen short so many times, but I really think that our tongue should be used in wisdom, and love.

Blessings

I have nothing against you speaking out against deviant behavior, if you do what the Word tells you to do and salt your words with grace. Romans 1 calls lesbians reprobate, but that isn't the full story. Romans also goes on to say that there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Preach the whole message. Simply shouting "degenerate" is not preaching the gospel of law and grace, it's merely name calling. Don't confuse the two.

You DO have the right to preach the law and grace.

You DO NOT have the right to name call.

I guess for me the question would be what purpose is being served in calling someone living an immoral livestyle a derogatory name such as a degenerate unless you are deliberately looking for trouble? What possible good can come out of it?

Blessings,

I tend to agree with the wisdom shown by those tempering their speech and refraining from name calling, and would never judge someone as reprobate as that belongs to God IMO.

Straight after i started this topic, i did feel conviction for not bothering to google Ellen to get her correct name, and in hindsight my tittle could be seen to encourage a wrong attitude. Thank you to those who have made this plain to me by their seasoning of grace.

It was error on my part and if a bad attitude continues i will call for it to be closed. Please remember the OP was trying to point out that IMO martyrdom was not far away for some, and that we can rejoice in the evidence that our Lords return is closer than ever.
