I looked in my Study Bible notes and all it says on this verse is:

The deliverance from sin described in Num 21:4-9 is a type of Crucifixian. (NKJV study Bible)

I remember this from a bible study. Moses was told to form a snake from a metal..I think copper maybe, and attach it to a pole and raise it above the camp. When a person was bitten by a snake, they were to look up and upon the raised snake and they would be healed, demonstrating their trust and faith in God's promise.

The raised snake and those that looked to it for healing are a shadow of the crucifixion and promise of salvation for believing, and trusting in God's Word.

Of interest is that the medical symbol even today is a snake on a staff.

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

I've always found it odd that Jesus compares himself to the snake that Moses lifted up. I get the analogy.. but why did moses lift up a snake??? oooooh I get it now!!! lol... snake represents SIN. Because when the Israelites sinned in the desert snakes bit them.

And Jesus was made into Sin on the cross...

I just got the answer my own question while typing the question lol.... but maybe some of you might like to read this..

Or maybe for Moses to lift up the snake took faith to do, and he obeyed,and we are to lift our faith, obey and profess our belief in Jesus as Son of God. It seems a little strange to me that John is saying Jesus must be lifted up as sin was lifted up?

Just a thought....

I was paraphrasing this verse

2 Corinthians 5:21
