The next version of the New American Bible (primarily a Catholic endorsed Bible) will come out before the end of the year. Word changes abound such as changing the word "virgin" to "young woman" and holocaust will become "burnt offerings."

There were disagreements, to be sure, such as over whether the pronoun "he" should be used in all references to God,

Hey Rad,

Well I checked 12 different translations and the word holocaust was not in any of them. So I'm assuming this word is exclusive to this translation. So changing this to " burnt offerings " may be a more accurate translation.

Replacing the word virgin with " young woman " is dangerous, even though they claim no intent to change doctrine.

The discussion as to whether or not to use the terms he and she just causes me to shudder.

Overall I think these changes are just another step down that slippery slope, but I do confess a very strong prejudice towards catholic doctrine and teachings.

''Whole burnt offering" would be more accurate.

"Young woman" is NOT. The Hebrew 'alma' was universally translated as 'virgin' until Maimonides suggested the meaning 'young woman' in late medieval times, in a debate with Christian scholars.

One bit of advice: Don't trust ANY version enslaved to Graf-Wellhausen!

The Graf-Welhausen Hypothesis was the beginning of the lunacy which today passes for legitimate Biblical Criticism. Lots of info on the net, I'm sure. I critiqued the critique in grad school, and the profs LOVED IT!!!
