Did you recognise that as a kid or an adult? I didn't recognise it until I was an adult.

Late teenager.

But I see your point, you may have not been instructed in such things at a younger age.

Ever seen Captain Planet? :noidea:

Yes! He was our favourite as kids

Earth, fire, wind, water, heart!

I saw it as Gaia worship.

I did right away!

Hmmm.... I must have been a weird kid. I don't remember Captain Planet. I did watch Captain Kangaroo as a kid, though. Are they anything alike? :21:

Looking back, I can't really remember any overly political or environmental messages in the stuff I watched when I was a kid. But then I tended to stick with things like Bugs and Elmer and Roadrunner. I did watch GI Joe and hubby and I talk about how no one ever died on it. They always parachuted out at the last second. LOL

The only things I remember being "taught" by my kids shows was how to use conjunctions from "Conjunction Junction" and how to count from the Count on Sesame Street.

I think things have changed a lot since then, though. Most of the cartoons and other stuff directed at kids today is little more than garbage. My husband's niece lived with us for a while a few years ago and she had a son who was 4-5 at the time. I was amazed by the less than hidden messages and agendas in most of the stuff he watched.

We shouldn't be surprised that children's programming tends to favor liberal or even socialistic worldviews. After all, the creators and writers of these show do all come out of the same educational establishment that produced the NEA. Sesame Street is the product of PBS, which is pretty leftist itself.

Unlike some, however, I don't see a nefarious plot here. Like all of us, the producers and creators of children's programming are prone to bring their biases to their jobs. In and of itself, that may not be a bad thing as long as the message is not too controversial and is age appropriate.

For instance, a writer who happens to be an extreme environmentalist can still produce a program that encourages good stewardship of the earth, not being wasteful, etc; as long as the more controversial "all capitalists are evil" viewpoints are left out. After all, can we really expect a 6 or 7 year old to understand the nuances of capitalism vs. socialism as it pertains to environmental policy?

When all is said and done, we should monitor what are kids are watching and resist the temptation to use the TV as a babysitter. I know, from watching my two g-daughters (ages 5 and 3) - this is sometimes difficult to do.

Fortunately for me, they are still at the age where the programs they watch just tend to teach reading and simple math. But as they get older, they may be exposed to a worldview that I, their grandmother, and their mom have problems with.

Hopefully when that day comes, we will have watched the program with them and can discuss with them why we believe differently.

Again, if it is an opportunity to open up discussion, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Blessings!

-Ed

I grew up watching Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood mostly. Captain Kangaroo had just moved to PBS (tells you when I was but a wee lad). I also remember watching a show called "Square One" and "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" I think I also watched the show Wishbone, and Reading Rainbow (imagine my surprise when I saw that LeVar Burton lived in the present and the future).

Aside from some of the environmental stuff in Sesame Street (which seems pretty tame compared to what is out there today), I didn't see any specific agendas in any of those shows (other than learning math, geography, reading...funny that a television show existed encouraging you to read...). After seeing some of the things my nieces watch, I may just have to raise my eventual children on the Saturday morning cartoon classics!

It is kind of funny, I remember there were a couple store owners in Sesame Street. I think one of them owned a market (not a supermarket chain), and a fix it shop (no Walmart or Costco). So they did believe in capitalism at one point.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Planet_and_the_Planeteers

Captain Planet and the Planeteers is an American animated environmentalist television program, based on an idea by Ted Turner and Robert Larkin III.[2][3] The show was produced by Andy Heyward, Robby London, Barbara Pyle and Nicholas Boxer. The series was developed and co-produced by Turner Program Services along with the partnership of DiC Entertainment and ran new episodes from September 15, 1990 until December 5, 1992. A sequel series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, ran for three seasons and was produced by Turner Broadcasting and then-corporate sibling Hanna-Barbera Productions. Both programs continue today in syndication.[4]

The program is a form of edutainment and advocates environmentalism.[2][3]

I am a product of late '82 and Captain Planet was a staple TV diet until I hit high school.

Ah, that explains it. I graduated from high school in the late 80's. By then I was mostly too busy to watch cartoons, though I'm pretty sure my TV was constantly tuned to MTV. Not even going to start talking about how much THAT channel has changed since those days!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
