Hebrew Word Series - Davar (Part 1)

Shalom all!

The word for this week is "Davar." Davar means word, speech, command, or saying. The word "davar" is commonly found in the Biblical text meaning "speak" as in the phrase "vayidavar YHWH el Moshe l'mor" (and The LORD spoke to Moses saying).

It directly correlates to Yeshua for it is the Hebrew equivalent to "Logos" found in John chapter 1. In Hebrew John 1: 1 reads, "Bereishit hayah hadavar. V'davar haya et haElohim, vElohim hayah hadavar." In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God." Yeshua is Hadavar Elohim, "The Word of God."

The Fifth book of the Bible, Deuteronomy is called "Davarim" (Words) in Hebrew. It was written at the end of 40 years of the Children of Israel's wandering in the wilderness.

There is something interesting to be seen here. The Hebrew word for "wilderness" is Midvar. Davar is the root word for Midvar. Notice that the last three consonants of Midvar are the same as the three consonants of Davar.

Davar is spoken by Moses (a type of Yeshua) at the end of the 40 years of testing in the wilderness. After Moses' death, Yehoshua (Joshua, another type of Yeshua) leads the children of Israel to the Promised Land (yet another picture of Yeshua).

Yeshua at the end of the 40 days of testing in the Midvar (wilderness) is confronted by Satan. Three times Satan tries to tempt Yeshua. Yeshua responds only one way. He uses Hadavar Elohim (the Word of God). Which book does Yeshua quote from all three times? Davarim.

See this? Davar HaChaim (The Living Word) is in the Midvar using the Hadavar Elohim, specifically the book of Davarim to defeat the Devil!!

We all know that as God Yeshua could have just performed a miracle and kicked Satan out of the desert, but he didn't. Why did Yeshua use the Word of God to defeat the Devil? He is our example. Yeshua had to show that Satan can be defeated by the Word of God and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Had he done something to the Devil that only God can do, He would have been much of an example to us, seeing that such an option would not be available to us mortals.

To the natural man, the Devil is powerful. Isaiah 59:19 tells us that when the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will raise a standard against him. The enemy (Satan) looks like a flood to mere mortals like us, but next to Yeshua, He is not a flood at all, He is not even a drip. The word in verse 19 of Isaiah 59 for "standard" is "noos" in Hebrew and means to "put to flight." The word for enemy in that same verse can also mean trouble, anquish, or tribulation. It does not necessarily refer to personal enemy such as the Devil though it can.

The point is that when the enemy comes in, whether that enemy is guilt, condemnation, depression, fear, tribulation, or even the Devil Himself, you have a powerful weapon the Holy Spirit has given you to put Him to flight. You have the Word of God, and it will work for you just like it worked for Yeshua.

We have been given this promise: Jam 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

The only means that we have of resisting the Devil is the Word of God. It therefore goes without saying I suppose that one must be renewing their mind in God's Word on a daily basis so that when the enemy does come against them they know what part of Scripture to use against the Devil.

Renewing your mind in the Word is a defensive countermeasure against the attacks of Satan. It prepares you for the times when you will need to spiritual battle against the adversary.

We would do good to heed the word spoken by God to Joshua:

Jos 1:7 Only be strong and very courageous so that you may be careful to do according to all the Law which My servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may act wisely wherever you go.

Jos 1:8 This book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it by day and by night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall act wisely.

We need to stay in the Word, and not depart from it. It is our guidebook. We need to keep it before our eyes and meditate in it all the time. We need to feed our mind and heart as often as we can on the pure Word of God. Turn off the TV and spend that time in the Scirptures. Get yourself the Bible on CD or cassette, and listen to it in your car on the way to and from work. Whatever you do, get the "Davar" in you. Someone has said "We feed our bodies three hot meals a day, and we feed our spirits one cold snack a week." We need the Word of God more than we need food.

Just as Yeshua, our Davar HaChaim (Living Word) wielded the Scriptures against the accuser, Satan, we can likewise, pick up the sword and do battle against the enemy as well. Yeshua has already won the war, we have His Word and His armour, and thus we begin from the place of victory. We start with answer to every problem and need to mankind, because we have the Word. We start with the answer!!! Think about that!! We start from the place that most folks are trying to end up, Praise God!!

Let us renew our committment to renew and refresh our minds in the Word in order to do battle with our enemy, Satan. In doing so, we will not taken by his snares and will not be unaware of his tricks. He is already a defeated foe. Lets begin living like the victorious nation of kings and priests that God has called us, and recreated us to be in Messiah Yeshua.

Until Next time, Shalom Alechim Chaverim!!

Shalom OneAccord, good to see you back!

Actually, alot of it amounts to gleaning wisdom from various Messianic Rabbis who have studied along these lines as well. I study Hebrew to eventually be fluent. I learn as I go as far the spiritual side goes. There is no single resource to learn from. The more you learn the language the more you learn the "spirit" behind it.

Most of the Hebrew resources you find in the bookstores simply give you the meaning of the word, and not the pictures that such words form in the minds of Hebrew speakers, especially those for whom Hebrew is their mother tounge.

I wish I could answer your question better. Do you have any Messianic congregations in your area?

Thanks for the reply!

I don't think we have any Messianic churches around here to teach me. I just have a natural love for language and word meanings and entymology. I am constantly on the lookout for a good study aid to help with in-depth explorations of words in the Bible, both Greek and Hebrew, but short of learning the language like you, I haven't found the 'perfect' resource. I just ordered the Hebrew-Greek Keyword Study Bible, which will be helpful and I'm sure it will whet my appetite for more, and also Kenneth Wuest's 4 volume Word studies of the New Testament. Am waiting for their arrival........

I'm sure a Hebrew translation of the New Testament would be fascinating for sure. Are there any translations that are Hebrew from the Greek and then directly translated to English??? (Greek to Hebrew to English)

Great study, by the way........ :il:

Both of those resources are great. Kenneth Wuest's four volumes will edify you, and the Study Bible you mentioned is excellent as well. I wish there was a OT Hebrew version of what Wuest does with the NT.

Closest I can think of is David Stearn's Jewish New Testament translation. He takes the Greek and renders the Hebrew equivalants. He tries to show how a Hebraic thinking person would read and understand the New Testament. You can get it on CD ROM along with the commnentary for about $40.00. The Commentary and NT can be purchased at any Christian bookstore, I think. If you you want them, and you cannot find them, let me know. Stearn also has a Translation of the complete Bible as well. "The Complete Jewish Bible" is the title. It very easy to read.

I have seen the Complete Jewish Bible, but never really took a good look at it. I didn't realize there was a commentary that went along with the NT Jewish Bible. I'll bet that's pretty interesting!

Now I'm really looking forward to recieving them! Watching for the mailman every day!

Hi Ted!!!!!!!!! I've missed you, too!!!!!

I'm not planning to spend too much time on Worthyboards, don't want to get too caught up and not get the dishes done, you know how it is. But I'm really needing some 'study buddies' as that's hard to find here in the flesh. So I'll probably just hang out in the Study forum here mostly.

How's the homelife treating you? Bet it feels sooooo good...........Bless you!

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
