Believe it or not, there are a lot of underground cavities, many natural from dried up river beds, volcanic activity, etc, and some not so natural such as underground mining (probably not the case here though, being florida and how close they are to sea level its probably normal) Just in the past a lot of these sinkholes happened out in the middle of nowhere and no one saw them happen, and didnt even realize they did happen till after the fact, but civilization has been spreading more and more, more houses more streets, and statistically the chances of a house being over one of these sinkholes goes up the more houses are made-whats surprising is that more haven't happened, especially in areas like florida.
