So today I did a study on the prophecies in Isaiah regarding Jesus’s life and ministry. I believe the texts in Isaiah can be categorized by the following: The Promise that Messiah Would Be Born, The Promise of How Messiah Would Be Born, The Promise of What Messiah Would Do When He Came, and The Promises regarding Messiah’s Death. It’s amazing that Isaiah’s prophecies were made about 700-800 years before Jesus Christ came to the earth!

I know this is a bit long but I encourage you to see how good our God is! Once I started digging I couldn’t stop. God keeps His promises!

A. The Promise that Messiah Would Come

A child was promised to come to the earth. (Is. 9:6) Jesus was prophesied to come to the world to rule over “the throne of David and over his kingdom” (Is. 9:7) and the “Key of the house of David” would be given to Him (Is. 22:22). There would be no end to His kingdom. (Is. 9:7) Jesus would be a descendent of Jesse (King David’s father – Is. 11:1-2 also see Luke 1:32-33)

Is. 9:6-7

For unto us a Child is born,

Unto us a Son is given;

And the government will be upon His shoulder.

And His name will be called

Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of His government and peace

There will be no end,

Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,

To order it and establish it with judgment and justice

From that time forward, even forever.

The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Is. 22:22

The key of the house of David

I will lay on his shoulder;

So he shall open, and no one shall shut;

And he shall shut, and no one shall open.

Is. 11:1-2

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,

And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,

The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,

The Spirit of counsel and might,

The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

B. The Promise of How Messiah Would Be Born

Isaiah prophesied Jesus would be born of a virgin. (Is. 7:14 also Matt. 1:18-23 and Luke 1:26-35) This is significant as Jesus is the only one ever conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to a virgin. Jesus would be the Son of God (Is. 9:6-7) but He would also be sinless (Is. 53:9 also 1 Pet. 2:22) As a sinless sacrifice Jesus would atone for the sins of humanity.

Is. 7:14

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

Is. 53:9

And they made His grave with the wicked—

But with the rich at His death,

Because He had done no violence,

Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

C. The Promise of What Messiah Would Do When He Came

Isaiah was very specific in his prophecies about what Jesus would do in His ministry on earth. The first item of not is there would be a forerunner crying from the wilderness to get the world’s attention. (Is. 40:3-5) This was fulfilled in John the Baptist in the New Testament. (Matt. 3:3, Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4, John 1:23) Jesus was the Servant of God, the Elect One in whom God delights. (Is. 42:1) Jesus purpose was to bring forth justice for truth. (Is. 42:3) Jesus performed many miracles and He helped the blind to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, and the mute to speak! (Is. 35:5-6 and Matt. 11:4-6) Yet Jesus was a stumbling block of offense to the people. (Is. 8:14) Yet just as Isaiah predicted the people didn’t understand or listen. (Is. 6:9-10 see also Matt. 13, Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10, John 12) As Isaiah foretold Jesus ministry began in Galilee and the people in darkness saw a great light! (Is. 9:1-2 and Matt. 4:13-16)

Is. 40:3-5

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:

“Prepare the way of the Lord;

Make straight in the desert

A highway for our God.

4 Every valley shall be exalted

And every mountain and hill brought low;

The crooked places shall be made straight

And the rough places smooth;

5 The glory of the Lord shall be revealed,

And all flesh shall see it together;

For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Is. 42:1-4

Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,

My Elect One in whom My soul delights!

I have put My Spirit upon Him;

He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.

2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,

Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.

3 A bruised reed He will not break,

And smoking flax He will not quench;

He will bring forth justice for truth.

4 He will not fail nor be discouraged,

Till He has established justice in the earth;

And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Is. 35:5-6

5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped.

6 Then the lame shall leap like a deer,

And the tongue of the dumb sing.

For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness,

And streams in the desert.

Is. 8:14

He will be as a sanctuary,

But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense

To both the houses of Israel,

As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Is. 6:9-10

9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people:

‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;

Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’

10 “Make the heart of this people dull,

And their ears heavy,

And shut their eyes;

Lest they see with their eyes,

And hear with their ears,

And understand with their heart,

And return and be healed.”

Is. 9:1-2

Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,

As when at first He lightly esteemed

The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

And afterward more heavily oppressed her,

By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,

In Galilee of the Gentiles.

2 The people who walked in darkness

Have seen a great light;

Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,

Upon them a light has shined.

D. The Promises regarding Messiah’s Death

Jesus was beaten and His beard was plucked out. People spit on Him. (Is. 50:6) Yet through the oppression and affliction Jesus didn’t open His mouth and was led like a lamb to the slaughter. (Is. 53:7) Finally, Jesus was killed for the transgression of the people. (Is. 53:8) Jesus life was poured out unto death, he bore the sin of humanity, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Is. 53:12 along with Luke 22:37) Yet after the death the promise in Isaiah was that Jesus would live again or be resurrected! (Is. 53:11) One day when Jesus Christ returns every knee will bow and every tongue will confess the oath to God – Jesus is Lord! (Is. 45:23 also Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10)

Is. 50:6

I gave My back to those who struck Me,

And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard;

I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

Is. 53:7-8

7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,

Yet He opened not His mouth;

He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,

And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

So He opened not His mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,

And who will declare His generation?

For He was cut off from the land of the living;

For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.

Is. 53:12

Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,

And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,

Because He poured out His soul unto death,

And He was numbered with the transgressors,

And He bore the sin of many,

And made intercession for the transgressors.

Is. 53:11

From the labor of His soul He shall see light, and be satisfied.

By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,

For He shall bear their iniquities.

Is. 45:23

I have sworn by Myself;

The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness,

And shall not return,

That to Me every knee shall bow,

Every tongue shall take an oath.

So we must conclude that God keeps His promises. In Isaiah God promised in Messiah a Son to be Born, that He would do miraculous sings, that He would be a stumbling block of truth, that He would suffer for the sins of humanity and die as an atoning sacrifice, He would be resurrected, and at His return every knee would bow to Him! This is amazingly Good News! The promise is that if we believe in Jesus Christ we too are saved! (John 11:25 and Rom. 10:9)

What are your thoughts? What other passages come to mind in the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies in Isaiah? Did I miss anything you'd like to add?

God bless,

Jon/GE

Thanks brother. I'm not sure if telling us when Jesus would return is consistent with God's character seen throughout the rest of Scripture. It would be nice though.... :)

Look To Zion

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:

Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:

For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Matthew 24:14-22

And Look Up

Not even The Lord Jesus knows when He will return... We just need to be ready at all times.

The Lord did us a favor by not revealing a date.

Imagine how different our walk would be if we knew the exact time of His arrival.

Something to think about.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
