The diagram given for the answer to Question 1 should help you with this: http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireballs/faqf/ "Shooting star" is a layman's term for a meteor or fireball or bollide, but is usually used for the smaller particles that streak across the sky that have the same magnitude and size-appearance of a star.
