In OT,in Joshua

GOD commanded the Israelites totally killing  the persons in the cities their conquered, even including the kids and infants:

Joshua 11

11And they put to the sword all who were in it, utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed, and he burned Hazor with fire.

But in NT,in Matthew 5

43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” 44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you

--------

So we can use JESUS’ teaching to blame God’s command in Joshua, and even Moses, David, Samuel ,killed their enemies without any mercy.

And in Saul’s case, Saul and Israelites had the pity on king agag, but Samuel killed him according to GOD’s command, and according to JESUS’ teaching in Matthew, Saul is right, Samuel is wrong

So how to explain the Contradiction

I noticed that about the O.T also, God seems a lot meaner than Jesus for some reason, actually Jesus seems a lot more loving and peaceful compare to His father . There must be an explanation I'm sure, the Bible is a complicated thing to understand unless it's explained to you correctly...

Hi Silvia,

God bless you, there is no contradiction......and everything in the Bible must be taken in its entire context....The God of the OT may seem like a God of vengeance, showing no mercy and alot of people think Jesus told them something new, showing that God is a loving and compassionate God,untrue....the same way you (and countless others )are misinterpreting the Scriptures ,so were the people Jesus was talking to.

These were legal matters of the State and the authority was given to the judges to uphold the laws .....ie:you have heard that it was said, love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy....Jesus does not give them a new command these commands were from the beginning (lev 19:18 you shall love thy neighbor)the people were using the scriptures out of context to justify their individual actions(like an eye for an eye)these were for the judges to decide  as Jesus had to restate what they really meant because it was not meant for an individual...refer to Matt22:37-38,Matt5 38-39 and43-44

In the matter of Saul,he directly opposed Gods command....you can't confuse legal matters of State with people being accountable for their own actions and that is what Jesus wanted to clarify

The elimination of entire cities were cities of wicked, idol worshipping ,evil people that literally spit in Gods eye.....they could have chosen to worship the One true God but they chose to live however they pleased and ignore the Great I Am...they witnessed time and time again the power and might of the God of the Jews

God is the same Loving and Merciful God that He was from th beginning of time,in the Old Testament in the New Testament and forever.May you be blessed in hearing His Word and ask the Holy Spirit for Wisdom & understanding....He will reveal many treasures in His Word,He will reveal Himself to you in the Name of Jesus

                                                                                                           With love,in Christ-Kwik

And there's the explanation. Thanks Kwik. I really wish they didn't make the Bible so complicated to understand at times though...

I was looking into the why of a few of them and heres one that I have found that somewhat helped a bit. Apparently they did a "no no" and God warred on them till he put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Exodus 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this or a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Exodus 17:16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Heres the reason

Duet 25:17 Remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way, when ye were come forth out of Egypt;

Duet 25:18 How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, even all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.

So Amalek showed no mercy

Duet 25:19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget it.

1Sam 15:2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

Therefore no mercy is being shown back

2Sam 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

He was even angry at Saul when His wrath wasnt executed here...

1Sam 28:18 Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

Whereas Jeus said, ye have heard hate your enemies, but now I say unto love your enemies. There they were to execute his wrath, whereas we execute His mercy (avenge not ourselves and leave room for wrath). But it also says judgment without mercy will be shown to those who have shown no mercy, And that seemed to be the start of the whole thing with Amalek (He showed no mercy) in Duet 25:17-18. It does speak of God being willing to show His wrath, and what Saul didnt do (in the execution of it) Samuel finished and says...

1Sam 15:3 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

Even as it says...

Lev 24:20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

And again...

Duet 19:21 And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Then Jesus says

Mat 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

Mat 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

His serverity and his goodness are shown, even as His wrath and his mercy are shown. Jesus said his doctrine wasn't His, but the Fathers who sent Him, so it cant be that Jesus is nicer (lol) That was cute

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • George Whitten, the visionary behind Worthy Ministries and Worthy News, explores the timing of the Simchat Torah War in Israel. Is this a water-breaking moment? Does the timing of the conflict on October 7 with Hamas signify something more significant on the horizon?

    • Understanding the Enemy!

I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
