'Obama' filmmaker charged in NY in campaign fraud

NEW YORK (AP) — A conservative scholar and author known recently for his critical works on President Barack Obama was indicted in New York on charges he violated campaign finance laws, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.

 

Federal prosecutors said Dinesh D'Souza, who made the anti-Obama documentary "2016: Obama's America," was scheduled to be arraigned Friday on charges he directed $20,000 in illegal contributions to be made in the New York Senate race in 2012. The candidate he supported was Wendy Long, who lost to Democratic incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand.

 

Prosecutors said he directed people to make the contributions to the campaign and then reimbursed them, which is a violation of election law that limits total contribution from one person to one candidate at $5,000.

 

Prosecutors said D'Souza, a San Diego resident, was charged with causing the illegal campaign contributions to be made and causing false statements to be made in connection with them. They said the criminal case resulted from a routine review by the FBI of campaign filings by various candidates after the Senate race.

 

Defense attorney Benjamin Brafman said D'Souza didn't act "with any corrupt or criminal intent whatsoever."

 

He said, "It is important to note that the indictment does not allege a corrupt relationship between Mr. D'Souza and the candidate. There was never a corrupt agreement of any kind, nor was there any request made that the candidate take any action or refrain from taking any action as a candidate, or as a U.S. Senator if her political campaign were to have been successful."

 

In October 2012, D'Souza resigned as head of an evangelical college after becoming engaged to a woman while still married to his wife.

 

D'Souza resigned two days after the evangelical magazine WORLD reported he spoke at a Christian values conference in South Carolina and took along his fiancee, Denise Odie Joseph II. Organizers said they confronted D'Souza after concluding that he and Joseph had shared a hotel room while attending the gathering.

 

D'Souza denied staying in the same room as Joseph. He said he and his wife, Dixie, had been separated since 2010. D'Souza filed for divorce in California a few days after the South Carolina event, according to court records.

After the WORLD report, he called off his engagement.

 

D'Souza is a former policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and a prolific author known most recently for his critical works on Obama. His film was condemned by many critics, but has become one of the most successful political documentaries ever released, grossing more than $32 million.

Tricky.

 

If he did genuinely break the law, then all one can say is that he should have been more careful. But, I don't know how these laws work, since I never had any involvement in such issues. Nor do I know if everyone who donates or campaigns for large amounts of money looks into every law on the matter.

 

But, of c ourse, with the way the IRS targeted, and is getting away with targeting, Tea Party members (no, we mean "extreme Conservatives," like the ones that "don't belong in New York"), it leaves a lot of room for suspicion as to what is the truth on the matter.

 

The question then is how is he treated vs. how those who are not "extreme Conservatives" are treated. That would be very telling.

This administration selectively enforces the law.  They refuse to go after Black Panther members who broke the law at voting locations in 2008.  They won't enforce laws pertaining to illegal aliens being deported. They won't hold anyone accountable for Fast and Furious, they won't hold anyone accountable for letting our Ambassador and three other Americans get slaughtered in Ben Ghazi.  They won't prosecute the IRS for illegal targeting of political groups.

 

But...

 

They always find the time to prosecute anyone who is openly critical of Obama.  I wondered how long it would be before D'ousza would find himself facing a law suilt or getting audited by the IRS or something.

I have no way of knowing if D'Sousa broke the law or not, but my personal opinion is that this President makes examples out of those who dare cross him.  What we do know is that Obama has broken laws, that he has lied, and that he cannot be trusted.  That's pretty much the bottom line.

 

I did hear a preacher talk about a prophetic dream he had where Obama was saved, baptized in the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues.  This preacher said that the last part of his presidency was run much differently than what we have seen so far.  We can only hope a change is coming, only this time, let's pray it is a change for the better!

 

This is a reminder that we need to pray for our President and our country every day.

Dinesh is a Conservative, and that is why he is seen by Obama to be a traitor. I am not sure if he broke the law or not, but there are many who have broken the law and Obama ignores it.

Obama sides with those who think the same politics as he does, but he targets those who don't.

I'm sorry that I can't contribute any more to this or even provide evidence, but my gut feeling tells me not to trust Obama or his regime, and I will stand by that gut feeling!

Exactly.  It's pure hypocrisy to prosecute D'souza while ignoring and/or committing violations of the law and refusing to deal with those infringement.

If he broke the law he deserves to be prosecuted.  If he did this it would be sad for one who has so publicly proclaimed his Christian faith.

Those who support Obama will get a great deal of satsifaction in he is prosecuted while they remain silent about all of the recent scandals the adminstration refuses to investigate, much less prosecute.

Another conservative filmmaker has reason to believe so, because he knows how conservative film-makers are treated, being that he's in the same cross-hairs.
