Yes, Jesus knew that he was going to raise him from the dead. Just a thought, Jesus is as I understand, exprienced every thing that we face in life. Now, I think possibly he did experience mourning at Lazarus' death, in order to show he knew as a human, what it felt like to mourn a death. Therefore he wept in mourning, as he also had all our other feelings during his life and also his death on the Cross. This is something that I have also thought about. Just my take on it.

Greetings Joe,

Jesus never did anything "fakey". He wept 2 other times as well that is recorded. Once over Jerusalem and once at Gethsamene. Whenever Jesus expressed His "humanity" it was a heartfelt and sincere emotion. If I had come to Lazarus' tomb, I would have been rejoicing at the idea of Lazarus being raised up and God being given the Glory. What would sadden me is so much unbelief.

Blessings,

Dad Ernie

Dad Ernie, thanks for your thoughtful response. My thought was just that, a thought...yes, I do remember now about the other times he wept. Yes, after reading your reply, I do see that he was most likely unhappy about the fact that his followers were a little slow at catching on. I know he was forever saying to his disciples,to the effect,"You have been with me all this time and still you have yet to understand these things I tell you?" By the way, I've heard it preached,and believe it to be so, Jesus called on Lazarus to come forth,for if he would have just said,"Come forth,"out of that all the dead would have risen out of the cemetary. Yes, it is sad that he had to keep reminding his followers that He was able to do all things. But how many times do people still doubt today? Thanks, again, in Christ, Joe.

I agree with you nebula, on the different characteristics of each woman, and how Jesus minestered to each, but I still have to take in the whole picture in the passages below:

Luke 10:38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to what he was saying. 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me." 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42 there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

I think that particular statement was to identify a difference between the 2, and the importance one placed on time with Jesus, as opposed to Martha who didn't quite recognize Him yet.

Well, I'm not sure that would be a matter of not recognizing Him verses what to do about it! I mean, she was "distracted," just as many of us get distracted.

I often wonder, was Martha rebuked because she was not likewise sitting at His feet, or was it because Martha, in expressing love through serving, was trying to take Mary away from how she expressed her love to the Lord?

(Editted for typos)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

But, could you really envision her wanting to work in the kitchen and be apart from the Savior of the World, and sitting at His feet, to hear Him speak His Own Word, if YOU knew it was Him right there??? I just can't see that happening. That is why I believe Mary had come to the realization of who He Was, and Martha had not yet. I also think that is why Mary accomodated Martha the opportunity to meet with Jesus alone, she wanted the very same blessing for her sister, that she had.

Suzanne

But Luke 10:40 actually says that Martha was distracted due to her many tasks. In Greek the word there for distracted is periespāto. It means that she was in a state of anxiety. What is really interesting is that the Greek shows Martha literally bursting into the room. It was a rather explosive event. She was quite upset that Mary's time was being monopolized.

Even so, Martha knew who Jesus was. Martha also calls Jesus "LORD" or "Adonai," which is a title reserved only for God. No Jew would have called Jesus "Adonai" if they did not know who He was.

hmmm? Thanks Shiloh, I guess I'll have to go back and reread that one again. I still couldn't imagine NOT wanting to sit with Him though. :thumbsup:

Suzanne, I agree with you that to sit at His feet would be more desirable to me. However, look at Christians today. We walk with the Lord daily and sometimes manage to just sit at His feet. Yet so many other times, do we get caught up in trying to serve? I mean, we think that what we're doing is righteous and needed, and I'm not saying it isn't, but do we forget to sometimes just relax and be with God? I do. I get caught up in daily life issues and work issues and social issues and I overlook that fact that my Lord is right there with me all the time. Yes, Martha and Mary had Him there physically, but is our relationship and closeness any less?

Imagine preparing a meal for Him!!! I get nervous when my family comes over to eat!!!! :thumbsup::cool:

BTW - I have always felt that Jesus wept because of the unbelief. He purposely waited the three days before going there, knowing full well that Lazarus would be dead. He also knew that he would raise him. And something else I'd like to add. Death is a mystery to us, but not to God. Death is viewed differently by Him, because He knows full well the process. It is a temporary separation. We see death as a permanent one, even though we know that we'll see our loved ones again. Yet even knowing that, the grief sets in and we are in pain. Death is only a transition, but we're still looking through that dark glass. I think Jesus wept because He knew that they were not seeing LIFE afterwards. Like the death of Lazarus was the end of Lazarus. Thus, when Jesus raised him, He showed them all that LIFE does exist.

Did that jumble of words make sense? ;)

God Knows each one's heart;

Romans.12:15;

15Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others' joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others' grief].

Hebrews.5:8,9;

8Although He was a Son, He learned [active, special] obedience through what He suffered

9And, [His completed experience] making Him perfectly [equipped], He became the Author and Source of eternal salvation to all those who give heed and OBEY Him !

Jesus was the perfect Man by perfect obedience to the Father; He also felt all the pain which continually put down the flesh, but made Him aware of the suffering and pain of others.

He did what the Father told Him to do, even though it caused much pain, whether to others or Himself.

Whether Mary or Martha; at each time knowing their hearts, and the correct response to each one, at each event.

To know what to do and not do it is sin; and what ever isn't of faith becomes sin.

So Jesus did all that was told Him by the father, and did everything in faith, down to the smallest detail .

Agape; Ephraim.

    • You are coming up higher in this season – above the assignments of character assassination and verbal arrows sent to manage you, contain you, and derail your purpose. Where you have had your dreams and sleep robbed, as well as your peace and clarity robbed – leaving you feeling foggy, confused, and heavy – God is, right now, bringing freedom back -- now you will clearly see the smoke and mirrors that were set to distract you and you will disengage.

      Right now God is declaring a "no access zone" around you, and your enemies will no longer have any entry point into your life. Oil is being poured over you to restore the years that the locust ate and give you back your passion. This is where you will feel a fresh roar begin to erupt from your inner being, and a call to leave the trenches behind and begin your odyssey in your Christ calling moving you to bear fruit that remains as you minister to and disciple others into their Christ identity.

      This is where you leave the trenches and scale the mountain to fight from a different place, from victory, from peace, and from rest. Now watch as God leads you up higher above all the noise, above all the chaos, and shows you where you have been seated all along with Him in heavenly places where you are UNTOUCHABLE. This is where you leave the soul fight, and the mind battle, and learn to fight differently.

      You will know how to live like an eagle and lead others to the same place of safety and protection that God led you to, which broke you out of the silent prison you were in. Put your war boots on and get ready to fight back! Refuse to lay down -- get out of bed and rebuke what is coming at you. Remember where you are seated and live from that place.

      Acts 1:8 - “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses … to the end of the earth.”

    • Understanding the Enemy!

      I thought I write about the flip side of a topic, and how to recognize the attempts of the enemy to destroy lives and how you can walk in His victory!

      For the Apostle Paul taught us not to be ignorant of enemy's tactics and strategies.

      2 Corinthians 2:112  Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.

      So often, we can learn lessons by learning and playing "devil's" advocate.  When we read this passage,

      Mar 3:26  And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
      Mar 3:27  No man can enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strongman; and then he will spoil his house.

      Here we learn a lesson that in order to plunder one's house you must first BIND up the strongman.  While we realize in this particular passage this is referring to God binding up the strongman (Satan) and this is how Satan's house is plundered.  But if you carefully analyze the enemy -- you realize that he uses the same tactics on us!  Your house cannot be plundered -- unless you are first bound.   And then Satan can plunder your house!

    • Abraham and Issac: Pictures of the Resurrection, Part 2
      Shalom everyone,

      As we continue this series the next obvious sign of the resurrection in the Old Testament is the sign of Isaac and Abraham.

      Gen 22:1  After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am."
      Gen 22:2  He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you."

      So God "tests" Abraham and as a perfect picture of the coming sacrifice of God's only begotten Son (Yeshua - Jesus) God instructs Issac to go and sacrifice his son, Issac.  Where does he say to offer him?  On Moriah -- the exact location of the Temple Mount.
